Loreto: Call for Detailed Engineering to continue with the Environmental Remediation process in the Peruvian Amazon announced

For more than five decades, the native communities that belong to the Tigre and Pastaza river basins in the Loreto region have seen their ecosystems and livelihoods affected by hydrocarbon activities in their area. However, the State and the indigenous federations have been working together to ensure that these territories are remediated.

In this regard, it is reported that the call process for those national and international consulting firms wishing to provide the service of preparing detailed engineering files, within the framework of the Contingency Fund for Environmental Remediation, has already begun.

The actions to be carried out during this stage consist of field work such as the collection of soil and water samples, among others, which will allow the preparation, in the office, of the detailed engineering technical files that will later be submitted to the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) for evaluation and approval, and thus begin the environmental remediation stage of the area.

On this occasion, the work is limited to 06 impacted sites located in the Tigre and Pastaza river basins, whose rehabilitation plans have been approved by the Minem within the framework of Law 30321.

Companies interested in obtaining more information on the process can access the call for proposals portal of Profonanpe (http://profonanpe.org.pe/convocatorias/), Peru’s private environmental fund. The deadline for registration of technical and economic proposals is May 22.

It should be noted that the environmental remediation process is a long and complex path that involves several stages: from the identification of the impacted sites, the process of developing remediation plans, the development of detailed engineering, remediation and post remediation monitoring. However, concrete steps are being taken thanks to the articulated work between the State, through the Ministries of Energy and Mines, Environment, Health, Housing and Agriculture, as well as the indigenous federations of the Pastaza and Tigre basins.

About the Contingency Fund for Environmental Remediation

The Contingency Fund for Environmental Remediation was created in 2015 by the Peruvian State, through Law 30321, to finance remediation actions for sites impacted by hydrocarbon activities, which involve risks to health and the environment and, merit priority and exceptional attention.
