In a joint effort to address deforestation and forest degradation, representatives of the Indigenous Peoples’ Platform to Address Climate Change (PPICC) participated on July 11 and 12 in the Workshop to review the proposed REDD+ safeguards guidelines, where contributions and comments were collected, and consultations on the guidelines were resolved.
The workshop was organized by the Ministry of Environment (MINAM) in collaboration with the Amazon Eco and Bio-Business Finance Facility (EBBF Amazon), Profonanpe and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).
During the meeting, participants discussed the importance of safeguards for REDD+ implementation and the strengthening of its institutional framework in the country. They also strengthened the capacities of PPICC leaders regarding the proposed guidelines for the management and provision of periodic information on REDD+ safeguards. Profonanpe’s Research and Development and Indigenous Peoples’ Offices also participated in the workshop.

Commitment to sustainability
The workshop was attended by more than one hundred representatives of indigenous organizations, who were organized into working groups by organization. The participating organizations were AIDESEP, CCP, CNA, CONAP, FENMUCARINAP, ONAMIAP and UNCA. The importance of integrating ancestral knowledge into national policies and programs was highlighted. The workshop also provided an additional space for interaction among the leaders of the organizations.
“The EBBF Amazon project has among its objectives to contribute to capacity building for the nesting of REDD+ initiatives in the national framework; in this sense, it is important to generate a framework of safeguards agreed with indigenous organizations and applicable at the level of eco and bio-businesses supported by the project,” said Lourdes Lares, Coordinator of Social and Gender Safeguards of the EBBF project.
These types of activities are essential to strengthen environmental governance and ensure that the voices of indigenous peoples are heard and considered in decision-making. The collaboration between MINAM, the organizations and EBBF makes it possible to channel efforts to achieve balanced development that respects the environment and local populations.
In this way, Profonanpe reaffirms its commitment to continue working hand in hand with MINAM and indigenous organizations to advance in the fight against deforestation and forest degradation in our Amazon.
About the Amazon EBBF project
The Amazon Eco and Bio Business Finance Facility (EBBF Amazon) is a Profonanpe project, funded by the Green Climate Fund, which provides technical assistance and partially reimbursable Amazon eco and bio-business grants to promote the sustainable management of Amazonian forests and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
