United by the Tropical Andes Hotspot: CEPF closes the second phase of work commemorating great achievements

More than 150 partners from various organizations in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia participated in the Final Evaluation Workshop, an event that concludes Phase II of the Tropical Andes Biodiversity Hotspot program in the region.

Representatives from the Regional Implementation Team (RIT) also participated, comprised of Profonanpe (Peru), Natural Heritage (Colombia) and Latin American Future Foundation (Ecuador); the secretariat of Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF), and its cooperating entities, such as the European Union and the French Alliance for Development, organizations/entities that during these last years have demonstrated their firm commitment to proposing initiatives for the conservation of nature.

Since 2015, Profonanpe has been part of the Regional Implementation Team (RIT) of the Tropical Andes Hotspot Program, providing support in the promotion, management, and technical advice of projects implemented in Peru, the development of key capacity-building processes, and the maintenance and updating of information on conservation impacts. At the beginning of 2019, our institution was tasked with leading two components in the region: communication and monitoring. This entailed a coordinated effort to strengthen ties of cooperation and dialogue with our sister countries in pursuit of a common goal.

In Peru, 27 projects have been funded by CEPF and, with the support of Profonanpe, have achieved significant results. For example, one project led by Nature and Culture International Peru It laid the groundwork for the establishment of the Carpish Conservation Area in Huánuco in early 2020. Furthermore, the funding of the research led by the Center for Ornithology and Biodiversity in the Cordillera de Colán, Amazonas, has allowed the publication of four scientific articles, in addition to the recording of more than a dozen species of reptiles.

The Executive Director of Profonanpe, Anton Willems, participated in the event, where he gave heartfelt words of thanks to CEPF, the strategic partners of RIT and the members of CONREP, for allowing the institution to fulfill its purpose: “Promoting the sustainability of life by connecting humanity with the environment.”.

I appreciate the support of all partner organizations in the region, and especially the partner organizations in Peru, organizations that have been promoting commendable conservation initiatives in our country.”
