In order to continue promoting and strengthening private enterprises based on the sustainable use of natural resources associated with Protected Natural Areas (PNAs) that contribute to their conservation and generate local economic development, the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) and Profonanpe launched the third edition of the Entrepreneurs for Nature contest, an initiative within the framework of the Conservation Program for Sustainable Development (PROCODES).
In a webinar held on Thursday, January 26, Deyvis Huamán, Director of Management of Natural Protected Areas of Sernanp, and Claudia Godfrey, Director of Innovation and Strategic Management of Profonanpe, highlighted the importance of continuing to develop this type of contest because it allows us to promote business initiatives that guarantee the conservation of our Protected Natural Areas (PNAs) and demonstrate their potential as centers of sustainable development.

In this regard, Deyvis Huamán said that this type of initiative demonstrates the commitment between the State and the private sector to promote and contribute to the promotion of sustainable enterprises based on the management of natural resources, which in many cases are led by peasant and native communities or by women entrepreneurs who live in or near protected natural areas. On the other hand, Claudia Godfrey pointed out that in accordance with Sernanp and Profonanpe policies, at least 30% of the winning proposals must be led by women.

Likewise, the initiatives submitted to the competition must promote the improvement, expansion and consolidation of sustainable use entrepreneurship that provide a service and/or generate a product, through actions such as the improvement of equipment, infrastructure, use of technological tools, development of technical capabilities, among others, in order to improve and optimize the current offer of the entrepreneurship.
So far, during the first two editions, 37 entrepreneurships have been awarded and important steps have been taken to benefit entrepreneurs, supporting more than 500 people and working with 85 indigenous and rural communities nationwide. In addition, the foundations have been laid to learn about the context in which they find themselves, and each edition of the competition has made it possible to develop new strategies and strengthen them, to the benefit of the participants and the PNAs. This will have a positive impact on the country’s environmental agenda.
Entrepreneurs for Nature is a contest of the Conservation Program for Sustainable Development (PROCODES), an initiative that seeks to promote biodiversity conservation and contribute to economic and social development in protected natural areas through a strategy for the sustainable management and use of natural resources and environmental services and to promote the effective management of these areas with a territorial approach.
