Profonanpe and ANECAP signed an agreement to strengthen inter-institutional work for the sustainable development of communal reserves

This is a bilateral agreement that will allow Profonanpe and ANECAP to work together to implement a model of co-management of communal reserves through sustainable financial mechanisms.

Anton Willems, CEO of Profonanpe, and Fermín Chimatani, president of ANECAP, sign an agreement for joint work.

Last Thursday, January 26, representatives of the ANECAP and Profonanpe teams held a technical meeting at the facilities of Peru’s private environmental fund to jointly build the 2023 work plan. The meeting ended with the signing of the agreement, which will allow for its implementation and the execution of the proposed actions, with regular opportunities for the exchange of information and coordination.

The signing of this agreement has been the result of joint work by both entities during several technical meetings, in which the objectives and scope of the agreement were defined. Through this agreement, Profonanpe and ANECAP will be able to identify and develop fundraising opportunities, as well as promote the financing, management and technical assistance of projects of interest, especially those aimed at the financial sustainability of communal reserves, forest conservation, biodiversity, climate change, circular and indigenous economy and, in general, those that lead to the sustainable development of the Peruvian territory. In this regard, Fermín Chimatani pointed out that this agreement will “strengthen the work and governance of the indigenous peoples and develop the financial sustainability strategy so that they can count on sustainable technical-financial resources over time, continue to conserve their forests and generate conditions for a full quality of life and strengthen their own identity.”

This inter-institutional alliance seeks to strengthen the financial sustainability of communal reserves, where indigenous peoples develop initiatives for the conservation of forests, biodiversity and climate change. The scope of Profonanpe’s actions, in accordance with its institutional policies, involves working with indigenous or native peoples, and is therefore committed to the design and implementation of interventions that promote their informed participation and respect their rights, under a horizontal and intersectional work approach. Thus, the alliance between Profonanpe and ANECAP is a strategic starting point for strengthening joint work with organizations representing indigenous or native peoples, within the framework of the implementation of Profonanpe’s Indigenous or Native Peoples Policy.

During the event, the main scope of the project was also presented, as well as the steps to be taken to make the contributions of indigenous peoples to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) in communal reserves more visible. Coordination was also carried out for the dissemination of the Entrepreneurs for Nature initiative in the area of communal reserves, which aims to promote and strengthen Peruvian enterprises based on the sustainable use of natural resources in Protected Natural Areas (PNAs).

With this commitment, Profonanpe and ANECAP are expected to jointly engage in activities, projects and strategic discussions in the Communal Reserves and native communities that are partners of the Executors of Administration Contracts (ECA), in order to strengthen co-management and generate significant added value.
