Indigenous organizations reinforce strategies for Amazonian conservation

Indigenous leaders from AIDESEP, CONAP and ANECAP met to strengthen strategies, socialize progress and ensure compliance with the goals of the Joint Declaration of Intent - JDI Project in the Peruvian Amazon.

In an effort to strengthen the implementation of the JDI Project and ensure compliance with the technical and financial goals, the “Workshop on Safeguards and Technical Assistance to the POA 2024” was held on August 22.

This event is part of the Joint Declaration of Intent Project – JDI led by the Ministry of Environment and executed by Profonanpe, and is part of the strategies for the reduction and degradation of forests in the country to reduce Greenhouse Gases (GHG) and climate change.

The purpose of the workshop was to socialize and validate the safeguards instruments, and also focused on providing technical assistance to the participating organizations. During the workshop, critical issues were addressed, such as the identification of gaps in the fulfillment of goals and the unification of criteria for reporting, thus ensuring that the actions implemented follow a coherent and effective line.

During the workshop, Paola Sanchez, Head of Project Monitoring at ANECAP, stressed the importance of reviewing goals periodically: “It is crucial to review goals independently for each organization, because it allows you to analyze quarterly progress and see if you are on the right track. This is a necessary alert.

In addition, Juan Pablo Ferreyros, project coordinator for JDI activities at CONAP, highlighted how these sessions strengthen the technical capacity of indigenous organizations: “These workshops allow us to see progress and learn new things that we can implement in different activities, not only in this project.”

The workshop also focused on identifying gaps in meeting goals and unifying criteria for reporting, ensuring that the actions implemented follow a coherent path.

“What we have learned from our allies is a valuable contribution to replicate, because we all add to the progress that the people need,” said Nelsith Sangama, second member of AIDESEP.

With an agenda oriented towards dialogue and efficiency, this space was consolidated as a key to advance in the management of the JDI Project and reaffirm the commitment of all parties to the conservation of the Amazon and the reduction of GHG emissions generated by deforestation.
