Profonanpe will be the new strategic ally of the ASL2 project, financed by the GEF

This project represents the second phase of the Amazon Sustainable Landscapes regional program, in which countries in the region such as Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana and Suriname are now participating.

On November 25, the national project «Building human well-being and resilience in Amazon forests through the enhancement of biodiversity for food security and bio-businesses, in a context of climate change» (ASL2) was launched. This project arises as part of the second phase of the Amazon Sustainable Landscapes (ASL1) regional program, financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and carried out in Brazil, Colombia and Peru between 2016 and 2022, and which now incorporates to Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana and Suriname.

 

In a ceremony held within the framework of the National Land Management Meeting, which took place at the National Intercultural University of the Amazon in Pucallpa, representatives of the regional governments of Ucayali, Loreto and Junín, together with representatives of MINAM, FAO and Profonanpe, made effective the signing of this project that aims to promote the conservation of healthy, functional and resilient forests and wetlands to climate change, maintaining significant carbon reserves, thus avoiding greenhouse gas emissions and generating local livelihoods sustainable and resilient.

 

This initiative has a total budget of more than 140 million dollars, of which 15.6 million are part of the financing of the GEF (Global Environment Facility). In addition, it will have a total duration of 5 years, and work will be carried out under 4 components in 2 intervention areas, which are the Alto Ucayali-Inuya landscape, located in the provinces of Atalaya (Ucayali) and Satipo (Junín), and the Tigre landscape. -Cashew, located in the province of Loreto Nauta (Loreto).

 

Profonanpe, as the operational partner of the project, has been selected to support the Ministry of the Environment in the co-execution of the activities and will be primarily in charge of ensuring proper technical, administrative and financial management of the project, and proper implementation of standards and procedures. . Likewise, it will be responsible for the implementation of project governance, the administration and supervision of the proper use of resources, and risk management and compliance with environmental, social and gender safeguards. All this will allow that in the five years of project implementation, we can see the expected results to build human well-being and resilience in the Amazon forests, through the enhancement of biodiversity for food security and biobusinesses based on the standing forest.
