Aguaje declared of public necessity and regional interest

The Plenary of the Regional Council of the Regional Government of Loreto unanimously approved the Regional Ordinance that declares the aguaje to be of public necessity and regional interest, due to its environmental, socioeconomic and anthropological importance.

The aguaje is an emblematic fruit of Loreto, it also has great potential for the economic development of this department and the possibility of being exploited in a sustainable manner. Therefore, the approval of an ordinance declaring this fruit of public necessity and regional interest is good news.

On Friday, August 6, the plenary of the Regional Council of the Regional Government of Loreto unanimously approved the Regional Ordinance that declares the aguaje as a public necessity and regional interest, as an emblematic forest resource of the Loreto Region, due to its environmental, socioeconomic and anthropological importance.

This ordinance is of vital importance, both to safeguard the non-timber forest resources of the ecosystems known as “aguajales”, due to the lack of good harvesting practices, and to guarantee the viability of conservation efforts and promote the culture of sustainable production and consumption of non-timber forest products, with good management practices that respect sustainable, environmental and social criteria.

It also contributes to the eradication of logging practices of female palm trees and seeks to promote the strengthening and integration of the aguaje production chain.

The aguaje occupies a fundamental place in Loreto society, both as food and as a source of economic income from its commercialization. Because of this environmental, socioeconomic and anthropological importance, the Regional Council of the Regional Government of Loreto (Gorel) unanimously approved this declaration on August 6.

This is the result of work led by the Regional Management of Forestry and Wildlife Development (Gerfor), with technical and legal support from Profonanpe and in alliance with other public and private institutions that are committed to the development of forestry activities that benefit local communities.
