In December of last year, the rural communities of Cuncani, Pampacorral Tambohuaylla, Lares Ayllu and Quishuarani began the “Queuña Raymi 2020 – 2021” Reforestation Day, which culminated in March of this year. These activities were carried out in alliance with the Andean Ecosystems Association – ECOAN, which works with its partners Acción ANDINA and Global Forest Generation; and also brought together high Andean communities located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, mainly the Peasant Communities of the district of Lares in the Cusco region.
For the second consecutive year, the GEF Agrobiodiversity-GIAHS Project of Minam, Midagri, FAO and Profonanpe, actively participated in the afforestation and installation days and supported the production of 90,600 saplings for an area of 34 hectares. The five communities, located in the highlands of Lares, were in charge of production and final installation. This year, this amount of area has contributed to 150 hectares, which was ECOAN’s annual goal for the Vilcanota basin and, as a whole, to the 7,987 hectares planned for restoration by 2030, as contemplated in the Concerted Local Development Plan for the Lares district.
In this forestry campaign, 1,450 community members participated, 650 of whom were women. Family participation was important for community organization and inter-institutional support.
