With the aim of promoting an articulated and comprehensive management in the southern area of the National Reserve System of Islands, Islets and Guano Points, the new administrative headquarters of the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp), an agency attached to the Ministry of the Environment (Minam), was inaugurated in the city of Ilo (Moquegua).
The event was led by the head of SERNANP, Pedro Gamboa, who emphasized that this infrastructure aims to highlight the collaboration between different levels of government and the public for the conservation and sustainable development of this protected natural area. It will also enhance the protection of the ecosystems of Punta Coles, Punta Hornillos, Punta La Chira, and Punta Ático, as well as provide our staff with the necessary conditions for the effective performance of their duties.
He also highlighted the more than 50 years of German cooperation in the conservation and effective management of protected natural areas, which is now exemplified by the establishment of this new headquarters. Also participating in the event were the head of the National Reserve System of Islands, Islets, and Guano Points, Oscar García Tello; and representatives from the Regional Government of Moquegua, the Provincial Municipality of Ilo, the German Cooperation Agency (KfW), GERCETUR, GEREPRO, and others.

This new headquarters will contribute to strengthening the coordination with local and regional governments, as well as with tour operators and the artisanal fishing community to achieve proper management of the islands and guano points located in the Moquegua region that are part of the Reserve, and thus promote sustainable development activities.
The premises were acquired through the implementation of the “Conservation of Coastal Marine Biodiversity” Project – Third Phase of the Natural Areas Protection Program – PAN III, executed by Sernanp and Profonanpe, the Environmental Fund of Peru, with the financial contribution of the German Cooperation – KfW.
Its acquisition consolidates a management style that decentralizes the work of marine protected areas with local actors with whom we have been working continuously, generating better logistical conditions for the effective management of these spaces and the sustainable use of natural resources.
This headquarters has the functionality of an office and residence, which will allow the specialist staff and park ranger of the southern headquarters of the National Reserve System of Islands, Islets and Guano Points, where they will develop the various actions of planning and strategic management of the marine-coastal ecosystems of the country.
Likewise, its implementation contributes to strengthening the commitments to the management and conservation of potentially exploitable hydrobiological resources in coordination with the competent authorities through the management plan for hydrobiological resources (sea urchin, snail and mussel) in Punta Coles.
