Remediation: Call for the preparation of Rehabilitation Plans for sites contaminated by hydrocarbons in the Marañon River Basin

September 2021. – Profonanpe, Peru’s environmental fund, has initiated the process of calling for independent and qualified consultants, alone or in consortiums, to prepare rehabilitation plans for twelve sites impacted by hydrocarbon activities in the Marañón river basin.

 

This stage is one of the first steps in the environmental remediation process in this area, which has affected the health and ecosystems of native communities in the basins of the Pastaza, Tigre, Corrientes and Marañón rivers in the department of Loreto.

 

The call for applications was made on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Contingency Fund for Environmental Remediation, made up of the Quechua Indigenous Federation of Pastaza (FEDIQUEP), the Federation of Native Communities of the Corrientes River (FECONACOR), the Federation of Native Communities of Alto Tigre (FECONAT), and the Cocama Association for Development and Conservation of San Pablo de Tipishca (ACODECOSPAT).

 

The Contingency Fund for Environmental Remediation created by Law No. 30321 covers the Pastaza, Tigre, Corrientes and Marañón river basins. Profonanpe has the role of Technical, Administrative and Financial Secretariat of the Contingency Fund since January 2020.

 

The Board also includes representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Mines; Ministry of Environment; Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation; Ministry of Health; and Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.
