Pucallpa: Native communities strengthen their capacities in forest management

Workshop in Pucallpa brings together 20 leaders from 10 native communities for training in forest monitoring techniques and compliance with legal obligations.

With the objective of strengthening the capacities of native communities in community forest management, the project “Contribution to the Updated Implementation Plan of the JDI 2021-2025” (ICD Project) -led by MINAM and executed by Profonanpe- developed a training workshop in Pucallpa, in collaboration with SERFOR, OSINFOR and the Regional Government of Ucayali.

The JDI Project seeks to contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions generated by deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon, with the goal of reducing tons of carbon dioxide in six specific regions: Amazonas, Huánuco, Loreto, Madre de Dios, San Martín and Ucayali.

The event was held in the auditorium of the Hotel Tahuari in Pucallpa on July 17 and was attended by 20 community members from 10 communities in the Ucayali region. This workshop focused on the formation and training of community forest custodians, who are responsible for monitoring and following up on the implementation of the Management Declarations (DEMA).

The dialogue space was attended by Cecilia Flores, Manager of the JDI Project, who presented a comprehensive vision of the project, highlighting the progress and results obtained to date, as well as other representatives of Profonanpe.

“Collaboration with communities is essential to achieve effective and sustainable forest management. This workshop is a crucial step in ensuring that community members have the tools and knowledge necessary to protect our forests,” said Cecilia Flores.

The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), through the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR), presented the results of the technical assistance in the development of DEMAs 2023, which have turned communities into formal forest managers and thus market their forest products with legal origin, and also outlined their activities in community forest management programmed for 2024.

The Forestry and Wildlife Resources Oversight Agency (OSINFOR), for its part, focused on the obligations of the title holders (DEMA), emphasizing the importance of compliance in native and rural communities. The workshop also included interactive sessions where participants were able to resolve their doubts directly with the experts.

In addition, Community Forest Monitoring and Control Committees were formed with the participation of GORE Ucayali, thus reinforcing the organizational structure for forest management in the region. This initiative seeks to ensure constant and effective supervision of forestry activities.

The JDI Project and its partners will continue to work closely with the native communities of Ucayali, ensuring that their capacities are strengthened and promoting sustainable and beneficial forest management for all.

About the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) – Phase 2:

In 2014, Peru signed a cooperation agreement with the countries of Norway and Germany, called Joint Declaration of Intent – JDI; which was expanded in 2021 with the inclusion of the United Kingdom and the United States as observers. This agreement seeks to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in our country, which are produced as a result of deforestation and degradation of Amazonian forests. The JDI will allow us to access payment by results for the reduction of verified GHG emissions.

The JDI is led by the Ministry of Environment and executed by Profonanpe, with the participation of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, through SERFOR; the Ministry of Economy and Finance; the Ministry of Culture; the regional governments of San Martín, Huánuco, Ucayali, Loreto, Amazonas and Madre de Dios; and the indigenous organizations AIDESEP, CONAP and ANECAP. It is also financed by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation – NORAD.
