High Andean communities prepare to face climate change with an innovative project

Profonanpe, in partnership with German development cooperation (implemented by GIZ), MIDAGRI, SERNANP and the Mountain Institute, is participating in the formulation of a new project called “Resilient Puna: Ecosystem-based Adaptation for Sustainable High Andean Communities and Landscapes in Peru”. This project has been submitted to the Green Climate Fund and seeks to protect the puna ecosystem to strengthen the adaptive capacity of high Andean communities to the effects of climate change.

Glaciers are melting, rainfall is changing and droughts are intensifying, threatening agriculture, livestock and access to water in high Andean communities. “Resilient Puna” seeks to contribute to reducing this trend through the restoration, conservation and sustainable management of the puna ecosystem. With this project, ecosystem-based adaptation measures will be implemented to strengthen agriculture, livestock and the resilience of the communities as a whole.

The project also contemplates the creation of a long-term financial mechanism to support communities in the restoration of wetlands, pastures and water reservoirs. In addition, community participation in agricultural and livestock value chains will be promoted, taking into account gender-specific needs. Training will be provided in participatory planning, the formulation of adaptation measures and the use of development instruments.

Profonanpe will manage and implement a Financial Facility to facilitate the leveraging, mobilization and channeling of financial resources from the private sector and other donors to promote local initiatives led by local communities to implement ecosystem-based adaptation measures and climate-resilient value chains in the regions of Puno, Cusco, Arequipa, Apurimac and Lima.

In line with its social and environmental commitment, German development cooperation – implemented by GIZ – and Profonanpe present the project’s environmental and social safeguards documents. These documents describe the environmental, social and governance principles and commitments that will guide project activities.

With the “Resilient Puna” project, Peru’s high Andean communities will have more tools and support to face the challenges of climate change and build a more sustainable future.
