First “Garden for Pollinating Insects” inaugurated in Huancabamba

This new space will serve as a refuge and food source for species such as bees, butterflies, flies, and beetles. Located in the main square of Huancabamba, the garden has 50 native honey plants that will provide food and protection for these insects, which are essential for maintaining biodiversity and local agriculture. This initiative seeks to become a first step towards the creation of pollinator-friendly public spaces, as well as promoting sustainable practices in both rural and urban areas.

The inauguration took place during the Second Avocado Festival, one of the most important crops in the Oxapampa district, whose yield depends largely on the pollination work carried out by insects such as bees and flies.

As part of the garden’s implementation, a symbolic planting ceremony was held with the participation of authorities and representatives from the Oxapampa Agricultural Agency; the Huancabamba Chamber of Tourism, Agroindustry, Handicrafts, and the Environment; Foncodes; the Institute for Development and the Environment (IDMA); and the board of directors of the Avocado Festival. Attendees highlighted the importance of promoting joint actions to protect biodiversity and pollinating insects in the region.

As part of the festival, the Poli-LAC project also participated in training activities aimed at avocado producers. During a specialized talk, pollinator-friendly practices were discussed, such as native bee breeding, the creation of living fences, avoiding monocultures, and the responsible use of agrochemicals.

The project also had an educational stand that provided information to both producers and children. Through educational materials and fun activities, participants learned about the importance of pollinators, how to recognize them, and how to contribute to their care at home or in the field.
