Did you know that Peru’s Protected Natural Areas not only safeguard our biodiversity but also serve as a lifeline for hundreds of local communities? Or that each year new enterprises emerge, transforming these resources into sustainable economic opportunities?
Entrepreneurs for Nature is a competition that promotes the development of sustainable projects based on the responsible use of natural resources in Protected Natural Areas (PNAs).
This initiative is led by Sernanp, and in its 2024 edition, a total of 3 million soles has been allocated to finance 59 ventures encompassing activities such as ecotourism, food production, crafts, and sustainable management of agroecosystems. This funding has been made possible through the support of key partners like Profonanpe, AIDER, CIMA, Andes Amazon Fund, PetroTal Peru, and Conservation International.
“Today we celebrate the remarkable achievements of those at the forefront of protecting our biodiversity and fostering sustainable development in our communities. Their dedication and effort are an inspiration to us all,” said Juan Carlos Castro, Minister of Environment.
Among the winning projects are initiatives like the implementation of an interactive bioarchaeological laboratory, improvement of the production chains for beverages and crafts, and strengthening of the tourism offering in protected areas. Additionally, 30% of these ventures are led by women and more than 65% by local communities.
“One aspect that fills me with pride is seeing how we continue to ensure that women and local communities play a leading role in these enterprises,” stated Anton Willems, Executive Director of Profonanpe.

The Role of Profonanpe in Entrepreneurs for Nature 2024
Profonanpe plays a crucial role in the implementation of Entrepreneurs for Nature, supporting two specific areas in this edition. In the national competition, it has allocated 1.4 million soles to support 26 ventures that promote sustainable activities within various PNAs across the country.
Additionally, it has provided targeted support in the Illescas National Reserve, funding 4 ventures with a total of 130,000 soles. This intervention aims to boost sustainable development in this newly protected area, promoting innovation in projects that contribute to the conservation of its valuable marine and terrestrial biodiversity.
During the event, the launch of the VII Sernanp Scholarship Competition for priority research in protected natural areas was also announced, as well as the I Scholarship Competition for innovation in biodiversity-derived products. Both initiatives seek to strengthen the knowledge and management of these unique ecosystems.
“Today we recognize the visionaries who have shown exemplary commitment to our biodiversity, developing innovative solutions in our Protected Natural Areas. This competition, along with our allies, is a testament to collaboration in support of environmental protection and local economic development,” stated the Head of SERNANP, José Carlos Nieto Navarrete.
