Eleven local initiatives will receive more than S/750 thousand to strengthen adaptation to climate change in the Santa river basin.

These actions will boost water and productive security in the communities of Huaraz, contributing to the climate adaptation goals assumed by Peru in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

The project “Fund for Innovative Adaptation in Vulnerable Ecosystems in Northern Peru – Living Watersheds”, promoted by Profonanpe with financing from the Adaptation Fund, will deliver more than S/750,000 to 11 local initiatives that promote sustainable water management and climate resilience in the Santa river basin.

 

The call, organized by the Mountain Institute, lead partner of the project, recognized local initiatives that will strengthen adaptation to climate change through productive diversification, bioremediation and irrigation systems that ensure water for families.

 

 

The award ceremony was held in the Auditorium of the Olleros District Municipality in Huaraz, and was attended by more than 60 participants, including representatives of the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), Profonanpe, the Mountain Institute and local institutions, who highlighted the importance of promoting solutions with a community approach to address climate change.

 

With these local initiatives, the organizations become key actors to contribute to the adaptation goals of Peru’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

 

The organizations selected for the implementation of the local initiatives of the Competitive Fund of the project in the Santa Basin are:

 

  1. Chonta Water Users Association for Bioremediation 
  • Project name: “Bioremediation of water contaminated with acid rock drainage from the Chonta canal for productive use.”
  • Funding: S/ 70,000
  • Location: Ancash, Recuay.

 

  1. Cordillera Blanca Peasant Community
  • Project name: “Catchment and technified irrigation system for natural pastures”.
  • Funding: S/ 70,000
  • Location: Ancash, Recuay.

 

  1. Huaripampa Olleros User Committee
  • Project name: “Implementation of the water catchment and conduction system to improve the availability of water resources.”
  • Funding: S/ 70,000
  • Location: Ancash, Huaraz

 

  1. Canray Grande Rural Community
  • Name of the project: “Change of catchment point of the Rurec channel to ensure quality water in the face of glacial retreat.”
  • Funding: S/ 70,000

  1. Association of Agricultural Producers Paqllish Winchus Santa Cruz
  • Project name: “Water that gives life: Technified irrigation for Wincush and Paqllish, of the Santa Cruz population center”.

  • Project name: “Improvement of the catchment and conduction system of the irrigation system of the Santa Cruz Users Committee.”

  • Project name: “Implement good livestock practices with a commercial approach in guinea pig breeding and strengthen food security.”

  • Project name: Sustainable management of natural pastures and grazing control through the reinforcement of the fence

About the Cuencas Vivas Project

The mission of the Cuencas Vivas project is to strengthen the resilience of communities and ecosystems in northern Peru to the effects of climate change.

 

This project is promoted by Profonanpe, Peru’s environmental fund, with financing from the Adaptation Fund and the participation of local leader partners, responsible for implementation in the territory.
