Dialogue on the Joint Declaration of Intent: Evaluation and future 10 years after its implementation

On August 29, national and regional government institutions and indigenous organizations met with the signatory countries of the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) on REDD+ in Peru to analyze progress and challenges. The meeting, led by the Ministry of Environment through the General Directorate of Climate Change and Desertification, sought to strengthen cooperation in the fight against deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon.

The Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) on REDD+ between Peru, Norway and Germany was signed in September 2014 with the aim of significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the land use sector to contribute to the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030.

Later, in May 2021, the agreement was extended for five years and welcomed new partners (United Kingdom) and observers (USAID), reaffirming the global commitment to sustainability. Therefore, on August 29, representatives from Peru, Norway, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States Agency for International Development met to assess the current status and future prospects of the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) on REDD+.

Ten years after its signing, the JDI has been instrumental in reducing deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon, mobilizing resources and efforts to protect one of the most important ecosystems on the planet. This event focused on analyzing the achievements to date and charting the way forward, in a context where international collaboration and the commitment of local stakeholders are more necessary than ever.

The event was attended by officials and experts, who offered valuable perspectives on achievements and challenges ahead. Berioska Quispe, General Director of Climate Change and Desertification (DGCCD) of MINAM, presented the current status of the JDI, followed by an intervention on the support of the UN-REDD+ Program.

Profonanpe was joined by Anton Willems, CEO of Profonanpe, and Cecilia Flores, JDI Project Manager at Profonanpe, who commented that the anniversary of the JDI is a crucial moment to reflect on the progress made and strengthen our commitment to reducing deforestation.

“This event not only celebrates ten years of working together, but also provides us with a platform to discuss future strategies and strengthen our collaboration with all stakeholders,” said Cecilia.

In the second part of the program, representatives from sectors, Amazonian regional governments, central governments and indigenous organizations shared their perspectives and challenges on the impact of JDI in their areas of operation. The day concluded with a dialogue among participants to establish conclusions and next steps.
