What does COP16 mean for Peru?
From October 21 to November 1, 2024, Cali, Colombia, will host COP16, an event that brings together 196 countries with the common goal of halting and reversing biodiversity loss. Peru’s participation in this event reaffirms its commitment to conservation and highlights it as a key player in the protection of biodiversity at a global level.
Thus, with the leadership of the Ministry of Environment and the support of allies such as Profonanpe, Peru inaugurated its Pavilion at COP16, a space that reflects the country’s biological wealth and its efforts for a more sustainable future. This achievement is possible thanks to the collaboration of institutions that have contributed to the realization of more than 60 side events in the Pavilion of Peru. These include the National Society of Mining, Petroleum and Energy (SNMPE), Cerro Verde Mining Society, UNACEM Group, PetroTal Peru, Pluspetrol (Camisea), AJE, LATAM Airlines and German development cooperation, implemented by the GIZ.
Raquel Soto, Vice Minister of Strategic Development of Natural Resources gave the opening speech of the Peru Pavilion.
A strategic alliance for conservation
Profonanpe, as Peru’s environmental fund, has been a key player in the creation of this Pavilion, and over the next 12 days will participate in various sessions focused on financing for conservation. Its presence reaffirms the importance of financial support for the preservation of our ecosystems and the implementation of sustainable projects.
According to Yuliana Castro, Manager of Communications and Corporate Affairs at Profonanpe, “the commitment to biodiversity is not only a task of the State, but of all the actors involved in the sustainable development of the country. Diverse dialogue and a participatory approach must prevail so that companies, communities, civil society organizations and the State have a common message for our Peruvian representation at COP 16.”

Key topics at the Peru Pavilion
The Peru Pavilion will become a meeting point to address priority issues such as agrobiodiversity, food security, ecosystem restoration and species conservation. These efforts seek to promote innovative solutions that ensure a balance between economic development and environmental preservation.
By working together with our populations, we not only preserve biodiversity, but also strengthen the link between culture and nature, ensuring the conservation of our ecosystems for future generations, said Vice Minister Raquel Soto.
COP16 marks a milestone for Peru by positioning its biodiversity as a global asset, and Profonanpe’s participation in this edition reinforces its role as one of the main promoters of sustainability in the region. This event will also be an opportunity to strengthen international partnerships and mobilize resources to ensure the implementation of long-term projects.
