The Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) project, led by the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM) and executed by Profonanpe, continues to make progress in its objective of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon. Two important meetings were held: the 2nd Investment Committee (September 16) and the 2nd Board of Directors (September 20), where the project’s goals and physical and financial progress were reviewed.
Both meetings were attended by key stakeholders, such as representatives of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR), indigenous organizations and members of the Amazon Regional Commonwealth (MRA).
These meetings were fundamental to strengthen coordination between the sectors involved in the conservation of the Amazon, aligning efforts towards the protection of ecosystems and the reduction of deforestation.
In both spaces, the progress of the first half of 2024 was discussed in terms of physical and financial goals, approving certain adjustments to the 2024 Annual Operational Plan (AOP). The strategic actions for the second half of the year were also reviewed and planned. In addition, the semi-annual report was approved with proposals to optimize the progress of the project, which will allow us to continue working more effectively towards meeting the objectives set.

At the 2nd Administrative Meeting, Berioska Quispe Estrada, Director of MINAM’s General Directorate of Climate Change and Desertification, highlighted the crucial role of Norway’s support, as this backing strengthens the capacities of sectors, regional governments and indigenous organizations.
“Thanks to these joint efforts, we are making progress in GHG reduction through the management of Regional Conservation Areas (RCA), Indigenous Reserves (IR), community forest management and agroforestry systems,” Berioska said.
For his part, Anton Willems, CEO of Profonanpe, stressed the importance of building a comprehensive narrative that emphasizes that “we are not just talking about a project, but about the implementation of the JDI Financial Mechanism Program”. Willems emphasized that the achievements are the result of a collective effort, which encompasses both the actions financed by the project and other complementary initiatives.
With these meetings, the JDI Project reinforces its commitment to advance towards the reduction of deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon, in close collaboration with key stakeholders, highlighting the importance of a joint and strategic approach to environmental sustainability.
