In its first call for proposals, the Conserve Birds in Peru initiative announced the 7 selected organizations that presented proposals with innovative approaches to bird conservation, from the creation of subnational protected areas to the implementation of nature-based solutions and community participation.
The selected projects seek to protect endangered species and their habitats, and work closely with local communities, authorities and other stakeholders to ensure the long-term sustainability of living territories.
Las organizaciones seleccionadas para la implementación de la Iniciativa de Conserva Aves en Perú son:
- Amazonas Voluntary Conservation Network (RED AMA): is the largest Voluntary Conservation Network of Amazonas in Peru, made up of 16 individual and communal voluntary conservation initiatives (ACP) of the Amazon region that promote and coordinate activities that, working together as a great team, seek to improve their environmental management.
- Selected project: “Creation and expansion of private conservation areas within the areas that make up the AMA Network in the tropical Andes of northern Peru.”
- Financing: $149,483.
- Location: Amazonas
- Expected hectares: 6,000.
The AMA Network seeks to support the expansion of the Bosque de Palmeras-Molinopampa ACP and the Bosque Berlín ACP, as well as the reaccreditation and expansion of the Milpuj ACP, all of which are part of the AMA Network. This project aims to conserve approximately 6,000 hectares and minimize the impacts of deforestation and environmental and climate risks, working with the surrounding population, local communities, authorities and other stakeholders.
- YUNKAWASI: is an organization founded in 2007 that works with Amazonian and Andean communities to learn about their natural resources and provide them with technical support on how to use and conserve them.
- Selected project: “Participatory Conservation of the Tropical Andes in the Department of Junín – Peru.”
- Financing: $150,000
- Location: Junín
- Expected hectares: 52,703.66.
Its objective is to create a Regional Conservation Area (RCA) in the Pucutá Mountain Range (Junín), covering 52,703.66 hectares. The goal is to protect ecosystems and environmental services, as well as preserve the diverse endemic bird species for the benefit of local communities. Conserva Aves will finance complementary actions to Rainforest Trust’s funding, which guarantees a strategic alliance for conservation.
- Consorcio Manglares del Noroeste del Peru (CONMANOPE): is a social organization that was established in 2015 composed of six local associations of workers specialized in the management and harvesting of hydrobiological resources. For more than three decades, they have been committed to the preservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem and the sustainable use of its main resources, as well as to the management of Los Manglares de Tumbes National Sanctuary.
- Selected project: “Creation of the Manglares de Los Tumpis Regional Conservation Area (RCA).”
- Financing: $150,000
- Location: Tumbes.
- Expected hectares: 5,000.
CONMANOPE will contribute to recover and restore the mangrove ecosystem of Tumbes through the creation of a Regional Conservation Area, which will strengthen integrated management aimed at consolidating the Mangrove Ecosystem as an Integrated Management Unit in the Tumbes Coastal Marine Management Plan. This project is expected to protect and conserve 5,000 hectares.
- ANDINUS Association: is a non-profit association that seeks to promote the development of activities oriented to the generation of knowledge, environmental protection, conservation of biological diversity and sustainable use of natural resources.
- Selected project: “Creation of the private conservation area Caña – Huata.”
- Financing: $90,000.00
- Location: Junín
- Expected hectares: 2,000.
Its objective is focused on the conservation of the biodiversity of native species of the high Andean ecosystems, through the creation of a Private Conservation Area of almost 2,000 hectares. The Conserva Aves Initiative will protect endemic and migratory birds that are endangered or vulnerable, such as Black-eyed Scrub-Hawk (Atlapetes melanopsis), Black-banded Woodcreeper (Anairetes alpinus), Spectacled Woodpecker (Asthenes palpebralis), Oxapampa Antpitta (Grallaria centralis), or Junin Antpitta (Grallaria obscura).
- Development and Environment Institute (IDMA): is a non-governmental, non-profit organization, founded on March 13, 1984, with the purpose of contributing from the local and regional levels to national development; towards the achievement of a sustainable development model that allows improving and raising the conditions and quality of human life, the democratization of society, social and gender equity from an environmental perspective.
- Selected project: “Ecosystem protection for the survival of endangered wild birds in the headwaters of the Mariño microbasin: Proposal for the creation of the Rontoccocha RCA.”
- Financing: $100,000
- Location: Apurímac
- Expected hectares: 22,000.
Its objective is focused on the conservation of the biodiversity of native species of the high Andean ecosystems, through the creation of a Private Conservation Area of almost 2,000 hectares. The Conserva Aves Initiative will protect endemic and migratory birds that are endangered or vulnerable, such as Black-eyed Scrub-Hawk (Atlapetes melanopsis), Black-banded Woodcreeper (Anairetes alpinus), Spectacled Woodpecker (Asthenes palpebralis), Oxapampa Antpitta (Grallaria centralis), or Junin Antpitta (Grallaria obscura).
- Huarango Nature (HN): It is a Peruvian non-profit association founded in 2017 as a legacy of several conservation projects initiated in Peru since 2001, focused on the conservation, propagation and restoration of native species in the Peruvian coast and Ande.
- Selected project: “Community-based biodiversity conservation: protecting endangered species in a dry forest corridor in northern Peru.”
- Financing: $129,420
- Location: Lambayeque
- Expected hectares: 4,000.
Huarango Nature focuses on conserving patches of dry montane forests as habitat for threatened bird species and guaranteeing their permanence over time. It proposes the creation of a 4,000-hectare Private Conservation Area that serves as a biological corridor and focuses on research, participatory management, and financial sustainability.
- ProPurús Association: is a Peruvian non-profit organization founded in September 2010 that has been dedicated for more than a decade to the conservation of forests, the sustainable use of natural resources and the promotion of balanced and sustainable development of the indigenous peoples of the Peruvian rainforest.
- Selected project: “Private Conservation Area – PCA, for the conservation of endangered, endemic and migratory bird species in decline, in the Sawawo Hito 40 NPP and Nueva Bella NPP, Yurua district, Atalaya province, Ucayali department.”
- Financing: $148,981
- Location: Ucayali
- Expected hectares: 53,000.
The project will support the conservation of threatened, endemic and migratory bird species in the upper Yurua River valley, along with other vulnerable and endangered species, as well as safeguard important habitats in the tropical Andes region of Peru through the creation of two private conservation areas that will protect more than 53,000 hectares.
Conserva Aves represents a significant step towards the conservation of Peru’s living territories and demonstrates commitment through collaboration between organizations, communities and local governments.
