The XXIV edition of the RedLAC2022 congress was held for four days, bringing together the environmental funds of Latin America and the Caribbean to exchange experiences on environmental finance and opportunities in the world of environmental conservation. During the closing of the event it was announced that Profonanpe, Peru’s private environmental fund, would be the organizer of the next congress to be held in the city of Cusco in 2023.
The RedLAC network of environmental funds is composed of 27 delegations from 19 countries, which meet annually to address issues of relevance to the community, in line with global conservation objectives. Through conferences, panels and workshops, the environmental funds participate in discussions on innovation and opportunities in the world of conservation, as well as publicizing the initiatives they are leading in their countries for sustainable environmental development.

“Bird Conservation”
On the first day of the event, Profonanpe, together with the National Audubon Society, Fondo Acción of Colombia, the Sustainable Environmental Investment Fund of Ecuador and the Foundation for the Conservation of the Chiquitano Forest of Bolivia presented the “Conserva Aves” (Bird Conservation) initiative, which seeks to protect the region’s bird ecosystems through the creation of protected areas in 9 countries.
This inclusive conservation strategy brings together for the first time three leading bird conservation organizations (ABC, BirdLife and Audubon) and the RedLAC environmental funding community. The call for Peru is expected to begin in November of this year.
In his participation, Anton Willems, CEO of Profonanpe, highlighted the work being done in Peru for the effective management of protected natural areas through the “Peruvian Natural Heritage” initiative, which brings together the work of Profonanpe and Sernanp: “The most important strategy is to ensure that the people in the territory benefit from conservation. To this end, we need protected areas written on paper and organizations that will buy the lawsuit and stick around for a long time. The environmental funds have been living this history for many more years and we will continue to do so for many more years to bring financial innovations, new perspectives, public, local, regional and national incidence, at the network level and in different spaces.”

Cusco, venue for RedLAC2023
During the closing of the event, Profonanpe was presented as the organizer of the XXV RedLAC congress, which will take place next year. It was announced that the event will be held in the city of Cusco, a region that is home to two of the country’s most representative protected natural areas: the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary and the Manu National Park.
