In a joint effort to address deforestation and forest degradation, representatives of the Indigenous Peoples' Platform on Climate Change (PPICC) participated on July 11 and 12 in the workshop to review the proposed REDD+ safeguards guidelines, where contributions and comments were gathered, and questions regarding the guidelines were addressed.

The workshop was organized by the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM) in collaboration with the Amazonian Eco and Biobusiness Finance Facility (EBBF Amazonía) project, Profonanpe, and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).

During the meeting, participants discussed the importance of safeguards for the implementation of REDD+ and the strengthening of its institutional framework in the country. In addition, the capacities of PPICC leaders were strengthened regarding the proposed guidelines for the management and provision of periodic information on REDD+ safeguards. Profonanpe’s Research and Development Office and Indigenous Peoples Office also participated in the workshop.

Commitment to Sustainability

The workshop was attended by more than a hundred representatives from indigenous organizations, who were divided into working groups by organization. The participating organizations were AIDESEP, CCP, CNA, CONAP, FENMUCARINAP, ONAMIAP, and UNCA. The importance of integrating ancestral knowledge into national policies and programs was emphasized. Likewise, the workshop provided an additional space for interaction among the leaders of the organizations.

One of the objectives of the EBBF Amazon project is to contribute to capacity building for the integration of REDD+ initiatives within the national framework; in this regard, it is important to develop a safeguards framework agreed upon with indigenous organizations and applicable at the level of the eco- and bio-businesses supported by the project”, said Lourdes Lares, Social and Gender Safeguards Coordinator for the EBBF project.

These types of activities are essential for strengthening environmental governance and ensuring that the voices of indigenous peoples are heard and taken into account in decision-making. The collaboration between MINAM, civil society organizations, and the EBBF makes it possible to channel efforts toward achieving balanced development that respects the environment and local communities.

De esta manera, Profonanpe reafirma su compromiso de seguir trabajando de la mano con el MINAM y las organizaciones indígenas, para avanzar en la lucha contra la deforestación y la degradación de los bosques de nuestra Amazonía.
