The Huanuco region continues to implement actions against deforestation with the delivery of 135 Contracts of Assignment in Use for Agroforestry Systems (CCUSAF) to 117 producers in the province of Leoncio Prado. These contracts were delivered during a ceremony on November 28th at the Paraninfo of the National Agrarian University of the Province of Leoncio Prado.

The CCUSAFs formalize the use of forested land and enable the implementation of agricultural, forestry and soil recovery activities under a sustainable approach. Together, the 135 contracts granted cover 434.55 hectares, where families will be able to promote agroforestry systems that regenerate the forest, improve the soil and diversify their livelihoods.

In addition to this delivery, a drone and three differential GPS were provided, equipment that will strengthen the technical work in the field for the collection of photogrammetric information and the preparation of high-precision georeferenced maps. This technology will provide detailed information for the management of the area to be formalized, the sustainable planning of the use of its resources and the process of registering the properties with Sunarp.

This new delivery is in addition to the 67 contracts awarded in July in the province of Puerto Inca, also with support from the Joint Declaration of Intent (JIU) Financial Mechanism, which is led by the Ministry of the Environment and executed by Profonanpe with funding from the Norwegian International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI). With this, Huánuco consolidates its progress in the formalization of agroforestry practices that contribute to slowing forest conversion and reducing pressure on the Peruvian Amazon.

The delivery process was led by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture of Huanuco, through the Technical Administration of Forestry and Wildlife (ATFFS) Tingo Maria, with the technical support of the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) and the Supervisory Body of Forestry and Wildlife Resources (OSINFOR).

With the delivery in Tingo Maria and the previous experience in Puerto Inca, the region is moving towards a more productive and sustainable Amazon, strengthening the coordination between institutions and producers and contributing to meeting the national goal of reducing emissions from deforestation by 2025.

Regarding the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) – Phase 2

The Joint Declaration of Intent is a voluntary cooperation agreement signed by the governments of Peru, Norway, and Germany in 2014 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. The United Kingdom joined in the addendum signed for the period 2021–2025.

The DCI is led by the Ministry of the Environment and implemented by Profonanpe as the financial mechanism, with the participation of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, through SERFOR; the Ministry of Culture; the regional governments of San Martín, Huánuco, Ucayali, Loreto, Amazonas, and Madre de Dios; and the indigenous organizations AIDESEP, CONAP, and ANECAP. It also receives funding from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD). Learn more here.
