The Flores de Maguey Association inaugurated 10 family-run units equipped with sheds for raising 200 chickens, as well as materials for proper poultry management, in the towns of Canrey Chico and San Miguel de Achic, in the district of Recuay, Ancash.

The initiative included a training program on nutrition, animal health, biosecurity, egg production, financial management, and local marketing, supplemented by ongoing technical assistance, as part of efforts aimed at improving food security and the livelihoods of rural families in the face of climate change.

The modules were set up by the beneficiaries themselves with technical support from the project, incorporating traditional practices and knowledge adapted to the region’s climatic conditions. This integration of local knowledge and technical assistance strengthens community capacities and contributes to the revival of knowledge related to sustainable resource management.

The initiative is part of the “Raising Dual-Purpose Chickens to Feed and Support Our Families” project, launched as part of the Living Basins, with the goal of diversifying family production, improving household nutrition, and creating opportunities for supplemental income. It aims to increase the resilience of rural families to the effects of climate change, particularly in the face of events such as droughts and frosts that reduce agricultural productivity.

It also contributes to the organizational strengthening and economic empowerment of rural women, who play a key role in managing household resources, preserving local knowledge, and implementing adaptation practices in their communities.

The project Living Basins is implemented by Profonanpe, with financing from the Adaptation Fund, and led by Mountain Institute in the Santa river basin, in the Ancash region. Its objective is to strengthen the resilience of communities and ecosystems in the face of climate change, contributing to national adaptation goals.
