Amazonian bio-businesses will receive up to USD 150,000 to consolidate their interventions and scale their impact on climate change mitigation

After 3 weeks of technical visits, the results of the Amazon Bioinvestment contest were published, a contest promoted by the Amazon Eco and Bio-business Finance Facility (EBBF Amazon) project, which will benefit 16 bio-businesses with business advice and/or financing in its first edition. .

The selected ventures will receive a partially reimbursable financing of up to USD 150,000, and business advice for the scaling and consolidation of their business models.

The EBBF Amazonía project, implemented by Profonanpe in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment and financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), seeks to mitigate the effects of climate change, by means ofconservation and restoration of Amazonian forests.

The winning bio-businesses come from the regions of Loreto, San Martin, Cusco and Madre de Dios, and are developed in key production chains for the sustainability of the Amazon, promoting activities related to non-timber forest exploitation, agroforestry and ecotourism.

During the visits, the participants learned about the initiatives, led by companies and producer organizations with a strong commitment to forest conservation and the well-being of local communities.

The first edition of the Amazon Bioinvestment contest responds to the objectives of the EBBF Amazon project, which plans to benefit more than 50 Amazonian bio-businesses in 10 years, with a total fund of USD 4.6 million for partially reimbursable financing. This is expected to achieve the sustainable management of more than 81,000 hectares of forest and mitigate 1.9 million tons of CO₂ over the next ten years, improving the income of more than 2,400 people in rural and native communities.

This first edition of the contest covered the Amazon regions of Cusco, Puno, Madre de Dios, Loreto, San Martin and Amazonas. A second launch is planned for the coming months, which will be announced through Profonanpe's networks and website.
