Indigenous organizations reinforce strategies for Amazonian conservation

Indigenous leaders from AIDESEP, CONAP, and ANECAP met to strengthen strategies, share progress, and ensure the achievement of the goals of the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) project in the Peruvian Amazon.

In an effort to strengthen the implementation of the DCI Project and ensure compliance with technical and financial targets, the “Workshop on Safeguards and Technical Assistance for the 2024 POA” was held on August 22.

This event is being held as part of the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) Project, led by the Ministry of the Environment and implemented by Profonanpe, and is part of the country’s strategies to address deforestation and forest degradation in order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and mitigate climate change.

The workshop aimed to share and validate the safeguards instruments, and also focused on providing technical assistance to participating organizations. During the event, critical issues were addressed, such as identifying gaps in the achievement of goals and standardizing reporting criteria, thereby ensuring that the actions implemented follow a consistent and effective approach.

During the workshop, Paola Sánchez, ANECAP’s project monitoring manager, emphasized the importance of reviewing goals on a regular basis: “It is crucial for each organization to review its goals independently, because this allows you to analyze quarterly progress and see if you are on the right track. This is a necessary reminder.”

In addition, Juan Pablo Ferreyros, project coordinator for DCI’s activities at CONAP, highlighted how these sessions strengthen the technical capacity of indigenous organizations: “These workshops allow us to see the progress we’ve made and learn new things that we can apply to various activities, not just this project.”

The workshop also focused on identifying gaps in the achievement of goals and on standardizing reporting criteria, ensuring that the actions taken follow a consistent approach.

“What we’ve learned from our partners is a valuable lesson worth emulating, because we’re all working together to bring about the progress the people need”, señaló Nelsith Sangama, segunda vocal de AIDESEP.

With an agenda focused on dialogue and efficiency, this forum established itself as a key platform for advancing the management of the DCI Project and reaffirming all parties’ commitment to the conservation of the Amazon and the reduction of GHG emissions caused by deforestation.
