Eleven local initiatives will receive more than S/750,000 to strengthen adaptation to climate change in the Santa River basin

These actions will promote water and productive security in the Altonadina communities of Huaraz, contributing to the climate adaptation goals assumed by Peru in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

The project “Fund for Innovative Adaptation in Vulnerable Ecosystems in Northern Peru - Cuencas Vivas”.”, The project, promoted by Profonananpe with funding from the Adaptation Fund, will award more than S/750,000 to 11 local initiatives that promote sustainable water management and climate resilience in the Santa river basin.

 

The call, organized by the Mountain Institute, The project's lead partner, allowed recognized local initiatives that will strengthen adaptation to climate change through productive diversification, bioremediation and irrigation systems that ensure water for families.

 

 

The award ceremony was held at the Auditorium of the Olleros District Municipality in Huaraz, The event was attended by more than 60 participants, including representatives of the Ministry of Environment (MINAM), Profonanpe, he Mountain Institute and local institutions, who highlighted the importance of promoting community-based solutions to address climate change.

 

With these local initiatives, organizations become key players in contributing to Peru's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) adaptation goals.

 

 

The organizations selected for the implementation of the local initiatives of the Competitive Fund of the project in the Santa River Basin aren:

 

1. Chonta Water User Association for Bioremediation 

  • Name of the project: “Bioremediation of water contaminated with acid rock drainage from the Chonta canal for productive use.”
  • Financing: S/ 70,000
  • Location: Peru, Trujillo

 

2. Cordillera Blanca Rural Community

  • Name of the project: “Technified catchment and irrigation system for natural pastures.”
  • Financing: S/ 70,000
  • Location: Peru, Trujillo

 

3. Huaripampa Olleros User's Committee

  • Name of the project: “Implementation of the water catchment and conduction system to improve the availability of water resources.”
  • Financing: S/ 70,000
  • Location: Ancash, Huaraz

 

4. Canray Grande Rural Community

  • Project name: ”Change of the catchment point of the Rurec canal to ensure quality water in the face of glacial retreat.”
  • Financing: S/ 70,000
  • Location: Ancash, Huaraz

 

5. Association of Agricultural Producers Paqllish Winchus Santa Cruz

  • Name of the project: “Water that gives life: Technified irrigation for Wincush and Paqllish, of the Santa Cruz population center.”
  • Financing: S/ 70,000
  • Location: Ancash, Huaraz

 

6. Santa Cruz Users Committee

  • Name of the project: “Improvement of the catchment and conduction system of the irrigation system of the Santa Cruz Users Committee.”
  • Financing: S/ 70,000

7. Association of Beekeepers Virgen del Carmen Pariapata

  • Name of the project: “Implement good livestock practices with a commercial approach in guinea pig breeding and strengthen food security.”

8. Maguey Flowers Association

  • Name of the project: “Raising dual-purpose chickens that feed and sustain our families.”

9. Mishky Kaara Association

  • Name of the project: Raising guinea pigs for food and family support 
  • Financing: S/ 70,000

10. La Nueva Generación Association of Agricultural Producers of the Olleros District.

  • Name of the project: Guinea pigs for better eating and living

11. Association of Agricultural Producers Huaripampa to Progress

  • Name of the project:  Sustainable management of natural pastures and grazing control through reinforced fencing
  • Financing: S/ 65,974

About the Cuencas Vivas project

The project Living Basins is to strengthen the resilience of the communities and ecosystems of northern Peru to the effects of climate change.

 

This project is driven by Profonanpe, Peru's environmental fund, with the Adaptation Fund financing and the participation of leading local partners, responsible for implementation in the territory.
