The Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) on REDD+ between Peru, Norway, and Germany was signed in September 2014 with the aim of significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the land-use sector to contribute to the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030.
Later, in May 2021, the agreement was extended for five years and welcomed new partners (the United Kingdom) and observers (USAID), reaffirming the global commitment to sustainability. Consequently, on August 29, representatives from Peru, Norway, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. Agency for International Development met to assess the current status and future prospects of the Joint Declaration of Intent (DCI) on REDD+.
Ten years after its signing, the DCI has been instrumental in reducing deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon, mobilizing resources and efforts to protect one of the planet’s most important ecosystems. This event focused on analyzing the achievements to date and charting a course for the future, in a context where international collaboration and the commitment of local stakeholders are more necessary than ever.
The event was attended by officials and experts, who offered valuable insights into the achievements made and the challenges ahead. Berioska Quispe, Director General of Climate Change and Desertification (DGCCD) at MINAM, presented an update on the DCI, followed by a presentation on the support provided by the UN-REDD+ Program.
Representing Profonanpe were Anton Willems, Executive Director of Profonanpe, and Cecilia Flores, DCI Project Manager at Profonanpe, who noted that the DCI’s anniversary is a crucial moment to reflect on the progress made and to strengthen our commitment to reducing deforestation.
“This event not only celebrates ten years of working together, but also provides us with a platform to discuss future strategies and strengthen our collaboration with all stakeholders,” Cecilia noted.
In the second part of the program, representatives from various sectors, Amazonian regional governments, the central government, and indigenous organizations shared their perspectives and challenges regarding the impact of the DCI in their respective areas of operation. The event concluded with a discussion among participants to draw conclusions and determine the next steps.
