The Carlos Ponce del Prado Conservation Award 2021 was launched

The recognition of the heroes and heroines of nature inaugurates its 2021 edition. Today, amid new challenges for our country and our planet, the heirs of conservation continue to build together.

With the aim of honoring the work carried out by park rangers and environmental leaders in the conservation of Peru's biological diversity, the call for nominations for the 2021 Carlos Ponce del Prado Award was launched yesterday. This award is inspired by the work and legacy of engineer Carlos Ponce, a master and benchmark for nature conservation.

In this Bicentennial year, the categories for which individuals committed to conservation can be nominated are: Conservation Champion, Distinguished Park Ranger, Outstanding Park Ranger, Outstanding Young Conservationist, and Environmental Personality. The latter is an honorary recognition for a renowned conservationist who, throughout their career, has contributed to supporting and advancing conservation efforts.

The 2021 Carlos Ponce del Prado Award – promoted by Conservation International, the Andes Amazon Fund, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and Profonanpe, with the support of the Ministry of the Environment and the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (SERNANP) – highlights the new challenges and aspirations that have emerged in the last two years. We are now more aware than ever of the need to actively engage in biodiversity protection to ensure the survival of our planet, while also paying closer attention to the efforts of the communities that inhabit our protected natural areas to keep them afloat each day, in the face of threats from various sectors.

Thus, the Bicentennial edition of the Carlos Ponce Award acknowledges that it cannot ignore the commitment citizens have made to the country's sustainable development, a commitment rooted in a multidisciplinary, gender-sensitive, intercultural, and intergenerational approach. Conserving our natural home requires everyone working together. Hence the importance of recognizing the men and women who inspire us on the path of conservation: park rangers, environmental leaders and defenders, heirs to our natural heritage, who, in an ode to the life of the planet, transform their ideas into sustainable projects with collective impact.

The Carlos Ponce Prize 2021 has opened its call for entries, with the conviction that this year the work of those who are most invisible, of all the heirs of nature, will be especially valued.
