Biological monitoring has established itself as a key tool for conservation in the Unchog territory in the Carpish Range, generating information on biodiversity and identifying high-value species, including endemic birds. This process is driven by the NGO Islands of Peace Peru, in alliance with the Cochabamba Peasant Community, district of Churubamba (Huánuco), as part of a participatory conservation strategy that promotes the protection of birds and ecosystems, actively involving community members, youth and children in the care and appropriation of their territory.
The monitoring activities also strengthened local capacities for the identification and recording of birds, the responsible use of observation tools, the recognition of endemic species and the valuation of the ecosystems where they live. These actions promoted the participation of community members, youth and local actors, reinforcing the link between the community and the management and care of the Unchog ACP. All of them were developed in the sectors of Unchog and Bomboncocha, allowing to position the territory as a space with high potential for nature tourism and bird watching, generating new opportunities for the community.

This process is strengthened by the articulation of actors in the conservation sector through field visits that facilitate the exchange of knowledge and the construction of a shared vision of the value of ecosystems. These advances are progressively consolidating the community management of the ACP Unchog, integrating conservation with local organization, collective decision making and the commitment of the population to the care of their natural resources.
As part of this accompaniment, it is expected to favorably consolidate the zoning and signaling of sensitive areas, the conditioning of the surveillance post, the development of a tourist circuit and a community tourism diagnosis, among other activities aimed at strengthening the Unchog Private Conservation Area.
Within this framework, Islas de Paz Perú promoted the visit of regional partners of the Bird Conservation Initiative, The community participated in birdwatching sessions and exchanges with community leaders. This experience made the biological value of the territory visible and strengthened the articulation between the community, institutions and allies in the conservation process.

The progress achieved shows that conservation in Unchog depends not only on technical actions, but also on organizing as a community, dialoguing and making informed decisions about their territory. In this sense, Islas de Paz Peru reaffirms its commitment to continue to support these processes, contributing to the strengthening of local governance, biodiversity protection and sustainable development in the Huanuco region.
Conserva Aves is an alliance between American Bird Conservancy (ABC), National Audubon Society, BirdLife International, Birds Canada and the Latin American and Caribbean Environmental Funds Network (RedLAC). In Peru it is implemented by Profonanpe in conjunction with Andean Ecosystems Association (ECOAN). It also has the financial backing of the Government of Canada, through Global Affairs Canada (GAC).
