As part of the Joint Declaration of Intent (JI) project, more than 100 representatives from five regions of the Amazon and the indigenous organizations CONAP, ANECAP and AIDESEP participated in a series of workshops to identify and systematize good practices related to forest management, conservation of natural areas and strengthening environmental governance. The process received technical support from SERFOR and was facilitated by Profonanpe.
The workshops, held in Amazonas, Loreto, Ucayali, Huánuco and Lima, were attended by technical personnel from regional governments and indigenous organizations, as well as administrative personnel from these organizations and project consultants. These events provided an opportunity to gather experiences implemented in the project's area of intervention.
Among the experiences highlighted are improvements in the process of granting Contracts of Assignment in Use for Agroforestry Systems (CUSAF), through the socialization of the CUSAF system. The company's work in the field, with real-time information validation mechanisms, helped to optimize technical processes and reduce time. In addition, efficient field work with real-time information validation mechanisms made it possible to optimize technical processes and reduce time.
In the area of community forest management, the company has strengthened its capacity for the sustainable use of natural resources, such as aguaje, and has developed training processes with cultural and linguistic relevance, adapted to indigenous contexts and developed in native languages. Progress was also made in strengthening community control and monitoring.
In the management of Regional Conservation Areas (RCAs), capacity building in the use of technological tools such as SMART for control and monitoring, as well as support in the development of business plans and their leverage with financial institutions, are noteworthy. Also noteworthy was the implementation of an environmental education plan in Huánuco, which incorporated content adapted to the local context to strengthen territorial appropriation and environmental awareness in educational institutions.
The information gathered during these workshops will serve as input to guide the work of future interventions within the framework of the new JIU Agreement and for the development of public policy recommendations that will contribute to the strengthening of public forestry and forest conservation policy.
About the Joint Statement of Intent (JIU), its Financial Mechanism and the JIU Project
The Joint Declaration of Intent (JIU) is a voluntary cooperation agreement signed in 2014 by the governments of Peru, Norway and Germany, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. In the addendum signed for the period 2021-2025, the United Kingdom joined the agreement.
The ICD has a Financial Mechanism, administered by Profonananpe, which manages the resources for the implementation of its phases. Within this framework, the ICD Project is currently being executed, which contributes to the implementation of the Updated Plan 2021-2025. It is led by the Ministry of Environment and executed by Profonanpe, with funding from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) through the Norwegian International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI), and the participation as implementing partners of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, through SERFOR; Sernanp; the Ministry of Culture; the regional governments of San Martin, Huanuco, Ucayali, Loreto, Amazonas and Madre de Dios; and the indigenous organizations AIDESEP, CONAP and ANECAP.
