Conserva Aves launches calls for proposals of up to $1,440,150,000 to protect Key Biodiversity Areas in Peru

This inclusive strategy will fund initiatives that promote the creation or expansion of regional, municipal, communal, indigenous, or private conservation areas in priority areas for birds. Deadline for submitting proposals: August 21, 2023.

With the aim of strengthening the conservation of threatened, endemic and declining migratory bird species in priority areas located in Peru, the first call for proposals for Conserva Aves was launched in our country, an initiative led by the National Audubon Society (Audubon), BirdLife International (BirdLife), American Bird Conservancy (ABC) and the Latin American and Caribbean Environmental Funds Network (RedLAC), together with the national partners ECOAN and Profonanpe, and the support of the Bezos Earth Fund.

“Conserve Birds, territories of life” It is an innovative, bold, and visionary hemispheric initiative for the effective conservation of nature that will provide financial support to organizations with commitment, experience, and technical capacity to lead the creation and expansion of subnational protected areas throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

In Peru, the call is led by Profonanpe, Peru's environmental fund, an entity specializing in the collection and administration of financial resources for the execution of programs and projects for the conservation of biodiversity, and ECOAN, a non-profit NGO dedicated to the conservation of endangered species and threatened Andean ecosystems.

Who can apply to Conserva Aves in Peru?

This competition will be aimed at indigenous peoples, community organizations, peasant communities, Afro-descendant communities, academic institutions and NGOs or representatives of the private sector, interested in the sustainable use of natural resources.

The proposed protected area must be located in one of the priority (eligible) areas of the Conserva Aves initiative. It must also have a regular presence of populations of one or more globally or nationally threatened bird species, with priority given to Critically Endangered (CR) and Endangered (EN) species. Details of the call for proposals can be found at the bases.

This inclusive conservation and climate change adaptation strategy seeks to fund initiatives that promote the creation or expansion of regional, municipal, communal, indigenous, or private conservation areas in priority areas for birds. It will also contribute to the design and implementation of management plans and ensure financial sustainability.

The funding amount is up to US$1,441,500 per project. The deadline for submitting proposals is August 21, 2023, through the Profonanpe website.

“At Profonanpe, we are joining the hemispheric initiative Conserva Aves, recognizing that these species are key to the preservation of habitats. Peru receives hundreds of migratory bird species each year, both boreal and austral, which coexist with resident species, yet only 401% of their critical habitat is currently protected.”, Anton Willems, executive director of Profonanpe, emphasized this point.

What is the scope of Conserva Aves?

Conserva Aves is an initiative led by the American Bird Conservancy, Audubon, BirdLife International, and the Latin American and Caribbean Environmental Funds Network (RedLAC), which seeks to foster climate resilience and sustainable development throughout the hemisphere. Its purpose is to promote the creation, consolidation, management, and strengthening of 100 or more new strategic subnational protected areas (regional, municipal, ethnic, and private territories), initially covering more than two million hectares in nine Latin American countries (Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, and Chile) between 2022 and 2028. Conserva Aves will build a conservation legacy that will address the protection gaps for many threatened endemic and migratory birds.
