The Fondo Concursable Puna visited twelve eligible districts above 3500 masl in Arequipa to finance local initiatives

The financial mechanism of the Resilient Puna Project, implemented by Profonanpe, took key information to the Arequipa districts of San Juan de Tarucani, Chachas, Choco, Orcopampa, San Antonio de Chuca, Yanque, Cayarani, Salamanca, Cotahuasi, Huaynacotas, Pampamarca and Puyca, to promote their participation in this call.

The Puna Competitive Fund is aimed at high Andean communities and civil society organizations that may submit proposals aimed at strengthening resilience to climate change. The deadline for submitting applications is April 15. 

 

Building resilience to climate change

 

The workshops held in each of these districts were attended by key regional and district stakeholders such as municipalities and their technical teams, as well as civil organizations, producer associations, high Andean communities and representatives of municipalities, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), the Ministry of the Environment through SERNANP and the German cooperation agency GIZ, among others.

 

Each presentation highlighted the importance of the Puna Competitive Fund as a tool to promote initiatives that contribute to the conservation of puna ecosystems and ensure sustainable livelihoods for the communities that depend on them. 

 

In addition, childcare spaces called ‘Wawita Pacha’ were set up, allowing women responsible for the care of their children to participate in these activities. 

 

Each of the district workshops was attended by at least 30 participants, representing the community's interest in the Puna Competitive Fund. 

 

Strengthening civil society organizations to work together

 

As part of the accompaniment process, more than 25 representatives of different civil society organizations were traineds through a technical workshop, which went in depth on the requirements, the type of eligible AbE measure, as well as the characteristics required to be a selected initiative. 

 

The event was held at the Vargas Llosa Library in Arequipa and provided an opportunity to share experiences and answer the main questions about the Puna Competitive Fund. Representatives of the Regional Government of Arequipa, SERNANP, representatives of the Country Program and other regional institutions also participated in this activity.

Financing from S/ 300 thousand

The Puna Competitive Fund will grant resources ranging from S/. 300 thousand to S/. 800 thousand to local initiatives that include production chains such as South American camelids or high Andean crops and integrate Ecosystem Based Adaptation (EbA) measures such as conservation and restoration of wetlands, qochas, agroforestry, among others.

About the Puna Competitive Fund

The Puna Competitive Fund is part of the Resilient Puna project and will provide financing to initiatives in 58 districts located in the regions of Arequipa, Puno, Apurimac, Cusco and the province of Yauyos (Lima) over the next 5 years.  

 

Puna Resiliente is financed by the Green Climate Fund, the Peruvian government, through the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) and the Ministry of Environment (MINAM), through the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP), the German government, through the BMZ, and the Government of Canada. It is executed jointly by MIDAGRI, SERNANP, Profonanpe, Peru's environmental fund, the Mountain Institute (IdM) and German development cooperation, implemented by the GIZ.
