The Joint Declaration of Intent (DCI) Project, led by the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM) and implemented by Profonanpe, continues to make progress toward its goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon. To this end, two important sessions were held: the 2nd Investment Committee (September 16) and the 2nd Board of Directors (September 20), where the project’s goals and physical and financial progress were reviewed.
Both meetings were attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation, the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR), indigenous organizations, and members of the Amazon Regional Association (MRA).
These meetings were essential for strengthening coordination among the sectors involved in Amazon conservation, aligning efforts toward protecting ecosystems and reducing deforestation.
In both sessions, progress made during the first half of 2024 in terms of physical and financial goals was discussed, and certain adjustments to the 2024 Annual Operating Plan (AOP) were approved.Strategic actions for the second half of the year were also reviewed and planned. In addition, the semi-annual report was approved, containing proposals aimed at optimizing the project’s progress, which will allow us to continue working more effectively toward achieving the established objectives.

At the 2nd Administrative Meeting, Berioska Quispe Estrada, Director of the General Directorate of Climate Change and Desertification at MINAM, highlighted the crucial role of Norway’s support, noting that this assistance strengthens the capacities of various sectors, regional governments, and indigenous organizations.
“Thanks to these joint efforts, we are making progress in reducing GHG emissions through the management of Regional Conservation Areas (ACR), Indigenous Reserves (RI), community-based forest management, and agroforestry systems,”said Berioska.
For his part, Anton Willems, Executive Director of Profonanpe, emphasized the importance of developing a comprehensive narrative that highlights that “we are not just talking about a project, but about the implementation of the ICD Financial Mechanism Program”. Willems emphasized that the achievements made are the result of a collective effort, encompassing both project-funded actions and other complementary initiatives.
Through these meetings, the DCI Project reinforces its commitment to reducing deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon, working closely with key stakeholders and highlighting the importance of a collaborative and strategic approach to environmental sustainability.
