As part of its commitment to protecting the country’s water sources, Profonanpe’s Water Resources Management Program (PGRH) continues to strengthen the Water Funds Platform, a mechanism designed to channel funding toward initiatives that contribute to water security and resilience to climate change.

In this context, Profonanpe and the Fundación Futuro Latinoamericano (FFLA) signed two collaboration agreements that will help promote Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EBA) initiatives, with a focus on gender equality and social inclusion (GESI), in two strategic watersheds in northern Peru.

In the Tumbes region, activities will be carried out in partnership with the FONGIAT Water Fund and will focus on building the capacity of women leaders, water user organizations, Sanitation Service Management Boards (JASS), producer associations, and other local stakeholders. The goal is to improve water resource management in the face of the impacts of climate change, promote community leadership, and advance conservation and monitoring efforts for ecosystems critical to water supply.

Meanwhile, in Piura, the joint effort with the FORASAN Water Fund will contribute to the conservation of the headwaters of the Chira River in the rural communities of Samanga and Cuyas Cuchayo. This initiative aims to strengthen the protection of strategic cloud forest and páramo ecosystems, promote the active participation of young people and women, and implement nature-based solutions for the conservation of water sources.

“These partnerships reflect the importance of coordinating efforts among organizations, communities, and local stakeholders to mobilize resources that will help conserve the ecosystems that sustain water availability for people, productive activities, and biodiversity,” said Christian Bueno, manager of Profonanpe’s Water Resources Management Program.

Both initiatives are part of the Financial Mechanisms Pillar of the PGRH, which promotes the mobilization of public, private, and international cooperation resources to strengthen the conservation and sustainable management of the country’s water resources.

In addition to promoting the Water Funds Platform, Profonanpe’s Water Resources Management Program promotes mechanisms for payment for ecosystem services (MERESE), the coordination of international cooperation, knowledge management, and public policy advocacy, with the goal of scaling up investments and generating sustainable impacts to enhance Peru’s water security. During its first year of operation, the PGRH has channeled an additional $1.3 million through EPS, international cooperation, and the private sector.
