On Friday, February 27, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of Peru, Norway, Germany and the United Kingdom signed a new Joint Declaration of Intent (JIU), reaffirming their common commitment to halt deforestation in the Amazon and to advance in the effective and sustainable reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.
This new stage of cooperation will run until 2030, and seeks to consolidate the progress made since 2014. In this way, it seeks to accelerate measures aimed at biodiversity conservation and the sustainable management of Amazonian forests, together with the promotion of sustainable economic activities that contribute to a low-emission development model compatible with the protection of the Amazonian territory.
The implementation of this new agreement will be developed in a coordinated manner between the Environment, Agrarian Development and Irrigation, and Culture sectors, in coordination with Amazonian regional governments and indigenous peoples' organizations.
According to Supreme Decree No. 001-2023-MINAM, Profonanpe is the entity in charge of managing the funds for the implementation of the phases of reducing GHG emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) under the DCI Agreement between Peru, Germany, Norway and the United Kingdom.
The renewed INDC updates the agreement signed in 2014 by the governments of Peru, Norway and Germany, which incorporated the United Kingdom in an addendum signed for the period 2021-2025. With this signature, the countries reaffirm their willingness to strengthen climate action, contribute to meeting national emission reduction targets and promote sustainable development in the Peruvian Amazon by 2030.
