Articulated initiative launched in the face of the forest fire emergency

Forest fires in Peru have affected thousands of hectares of forests, crops, and human lives. Profonanpe, committed to conservation, has launched a campaign to raise emergency funds and is calling on the public to contribute through the Perú por Naturaleza platform.

In recent weeks, the country has witnessed an alarming environmental crisis: out-of-control wildfires are devastating the Amazon and other regions. So far, 14 regions have been severely affected, with more than 80 fires destroying thousands of hectares of forests and farmland. The situation is critical, with 10 people dead, more than 1,800 displaced, and a devastating loss of biodiversity, with thousands of species of flora and fauna affected, according to the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci).

In response to this emergency, Profonanpe, Peru’s environmental fund, has allocated an emergency funding line of up to $100,000 to support organizations working tirelessly to combat these fires. These funds will be channeled directly to the most affected areas, where the local response has been overwhelmed by the magnitude of the disaster.

About the initiative

The support will be channeled through the Perú por Naturaleza platform, which aims to mobilize citizens, businesses, and organizations in a joint effort to raise funds to help combat forest fires and mitigate their impact on communities and ecosystems. The proposal is supported by Conservation International, WWF Peru, Perú Sostenible, WCS, and Conservamos por Naturaleza, an initiative of the Peruvian Society for Environmental Law.

Each contribution will be used to fund frontline efforts, restore affected ecosystems, and provide support to families who have suffered the consequences of this crisis. In addition, the funds will enable the purchase of essential supplies such as food and clothing for the first responders who are on the front lines fighting the fires, ensuring they have the necessary equipment to continue their work.
