Articulated initiative launched in response to the forest fire emergency

Forest fires in Peru have affected thousands of hectares of forests, crops and human lives. Profonanpe, committed to conservation, is activating a campaign to channel emergency funds and is asking for citizen collaboration through the Peru for Nature platform.

In recent weeks, the country has witnessed an alarming environmental crisis: out-of-control forest fires are devastating the Amazon and other regions. So far, 14 regions have been severely affected, with more than 80 fires that have destroyed thousands of hectares of forests and cultivated areas. The situation is critical, with 10 people dead, more than 1,800 victims and a devastating loss of biodiversity, with thousands of species of flora and fauna affected, according to the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci).

In response to this emergency, Profonanpe, Peru’s environmental fund, has earmarked an emergency funding line of up to $100,000 to support the organizations working tirelessly to fight these fires. These funds will be channeled directly to the most affected areas, where the local response has been overwhelmed by the magnitude of the disaster.

About the initiative

Support will be channeled through the Peru for Nature platform, which aims to mobilize citizens, companies and organizations in a joint effort to raise funds to help address forest fires and mitigate their impact on communities and ecosystems. The proposal is supported by Conservation International, WWF Peru, Sustainable Peru, WCS and Conservamos por Naturaleza, an initiative of the Peruvian Society of Environmental Law.

Each contribution will be used to finance front-line actions, restore affected ecosystems and provide support to families who have suffered the consequences of this crisis. In addition, the funds will allow the purchase of essential materials such as food and clothing for the rescuers who are on the front line fighting the fires, ensuring that they have the necessary equipment to continue their work.
