During COP28, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, which took place in Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023, Profonanpe, Peru's environmental fund, stood out as a key player in the implementation of innovative environmental initiatives. for biodiversity conservation and mitigation and adaptation to climate change.
Claudia Godfrey, Director of Innovation and Strategic Management at Profonanpe, On Saturday, December 2nd, he was present at a panel led by the Adaptation Fund, in which he was able to share our experience in developing a pilot Early Warning System for fisheries, as part of the implementation of the Marine Coastal Adaptation Project, which concluded in March of this year and aimed to contribute to reducing the vulnerability of coastal communities to the impacts of climate change. This project was funded by the Adaptation Fund.
Furthermore, within the framework of our commitment to the Environmental, social and gender objectives, Claudia Godfrey participated as a speaker during “Gender Day”, in a space organized by Sathsathai in the Nepal Pavilion. In this forum, called “Climate Change and its impact on vulnerable groups” highlighted the need to work towards gender equality and closing the gaps. in environmental projects, where women are recognized as a group in a more vulnerable situation due to multiple historical, social and economic factors.
From Profonanpe, it was possible to highlight the fundamental role that women have played in the field for achieving results in the projects we implement throughout Peru, as well as their increasingly prominent participation, in which, however, they still identify several challenges and opportunities for improvement to ensure sustainable development.

During the day of December 5th and As an entity accredited to the Green Climate Fund, Profonanpe presented its experience in the design and implementation of initiatives in the Peruvian Amazon, in the launch of preparatory support for the project «Expanding the co-management model of Communal Reserves to reduce emissions and increase the resilience of Indigenous Peoples in the Peruvian Amazon,” by Anecap and the GCF, and which was attended by Conservation International.
Profonanpe was also part of the “Presentation of the Community of Practice for Direct Access Entities (CPDAE)” in the Ivory Coast and Panama Pavilions, and on December 8, in the Climate Funds Pavilion Global Environment Facility (GEF), Adaptation Fund (AF), Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), in which the progress of the CPDAE was presented and the challenges for accreditation and reaccreditation were addressed, from the experience of Profonanpe as a fund accredited by both the Green Climate Fund as Adaptation Fund.
Given that Peru is a country vulnerable to the effects of climate change, we were panelists at the forum "Improving climate-resilient development in Latin America and the Caribbean"., in which the lessons learned from the Marine Coastal Adaptation project were shared, which are very relevant to the context of climate crisis in which we find ourselves, and which demands urgent action from the public, private and civil society sectors.

During the session on December 10, Claudia also participated in the panel of GCF “Catalyzing Change: Integrity and Accountability in Climate Action” with the Ministry of Environment of Rwanda. In the implementation of environmental projects, the channeling and management of donor funds is essential to ensuring project success and building trust, a crucial asset for sustainable actions and government support. In contexts of social, political, and economic crises, the coordinating role of environmental funds worldwide and their capacity for efficient accountability are key to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.

In its 30 years of operation, Profonanpe has implemented more than 60 projects and raised over USD 390 million. Throughout this time, the need to work alongside Indigenous communities and the private sector has become evident. These key partners are essential for environmental funds to collaborate on the sustainable management of natural resources through the mobilization of economic resources and the use of cutting-edge technologies. Therefore, just as COP28 saw an agreement and a call for companies to abandon fossil fuels in energy systems, Profonanpe once again invites the private sector to align itself with climate action goals and become strategic partners in building a sustainable planet for everyone.
