Profonanpe and Aidesep sign agreement for the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development of indigenous or native peoples of the Amazon

Both entities will join forces to promote initiatives aimed at strengthening the economy of indigenous populations in the Amazon.

With the aim of working together to protect biodiversity and promote sustainable development in the Peruvian Amazon, on March 30th, the president of the Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Rainforest (AIDESEP), Apu Jorge Pérez, and the CEO of Profonanpe, Anton Willems, signed an agreement of common interest. This agreement will facilitate joint efforts to identify and develop potential fundraising opportunities for initiatives undertaken by both organizations.

The signing of the agreement between Aidesep and Profonanpe is a significant step for the conservation of nature, the cross-cutting inclusion of ancestral knowledge and cultural practices of indigenous peoples, and the strengthening of the capacities of national, regional and local teams, within the framework of the different initiatives that are implemented for the benefit of the communities of the Peruvian Amazon.

Yohannaliz Vega, head of the Indigenous or Native Peoples Unit of Profonanpe, and Anton Willems, CEO of the same institution, highlighted the importance of providing technical assistance in projects and interventions that benefit the indigenous and native populations of the Amazon.

During the day, both entities were also able to exchange their experiences in relation to the efforts they have been developing for the conservation of biodiversity, the preservation of ecological balance, the implementation of bio-businesses, the strengthening of the indigenous economy, among other topics aimed at the sustainable development of the territories of indigenous or native peoples, taking into consideration the need for mitigation and adaptation to the effects of climate change. “The importance of signing this agreement is that climate action funds can reach the communities and finance activities that help minimize the impacts on the territory and on the culture,” said the president of Aidesep, Apu Jorge Pérez.

This agreement is the result of joint work by both organizations over several technical meetings, in which they were able to define their objectives and scope, as well as identify and develop opportunities that contribute to the financial sustainability of the indigenous or native peoples of the Peruvian Amazon.

Those present at the meeting included Jorge Perez Rubio, President of Aidesep; Nelsith Sangama Sangama, Second Member; Frank Janampa, consultant for the technical team of Profonanpe; and Rocío Roxana Trujillo Solís, Legal Advisor.
