Piura, July 3, 2022. Last Saturday, July 2nd, the documentary premiered on the beach in the district of Los Órganos, Talara. «Resilient Fishing», This film portrays the urgent needs and expectations of fishing communities and the close connection between their way of life and the sea and its resources. Ubaldo Tume Periche and María Marcelo Gonzales are the central figures in this project, which depicts the daily lives of the men and women of the sea, affected by climate change and other problems impacting marine life.
The documentary chronicles the battle against climate change being waged in the fishing communities of our country, and was produced by Profonanpe, Peru's largest private environmental fund. This audiovisual initiative narrates the silent struggle being waged by the fishing communities of Máncora and Huacho against climate change.

More than 100 people attended the screening on Los Órganos beach, which included the participation of fishermen benefiting from the project "Adaptation to the Impacts of the Marine Coastal Ecosystem of Peru and its Fisheries (AMC)," promoted by the environmental fund in the area. The documentary highlights the testimonies of the protagonists—artisanal fishermen and women entrepreneurs in the sector—and portrays the urgent needs and expectations of the communities and the close connection between their way of life and the sea and its aquatic resources.
«We are aware of the challenges facing artisanal fishing. That is why we are working as allies of the public sector in the challenge of adapting to climate change. We are very pleased with the openness and positive reception the project has received from both the fishing communities of Máncora and Huacho, where we will continue to focus our efforts,” said Anton Willems, CEO of Profonanpe.

«Resilient Fishing» This is an example of the work being carried out by the AMC project, funded by the Adaptation Fund and promoted by the Ministry of Production, IMARPE, the national program “A Comer Pescado” (Let's Eat Fish), and Profonanpe. This initiative promotes adaptation measures to reduce the vulnerability of fishing communities in Máncora and Huacho to climate change through four key areas:
- Added value: It promotes new technologies to improve artisanal fishing practices and generate greater value for the final product. Relevant information about aquatic resources is disseminated, and their traceability is enhanced, guaranteeing—among other things—compliance with minimum catch sizes.
- Technological development: It seeks to expand the capacity for collecting oceanographic data with new state-of-the-art technological tools, such as autonomous submarines, also called gliders.
- New business: It promotes the technical and productive capacities of fishing coves to venture into new economic activities such as aquaculture, experiential tourism and the enhancement of marine ecosystems, production of biofertilizers, among others.
- Women's empowerment: It promotes the participation of women in new spaces linked to artisanal fishing.
«»We are grateful for the support provided by the project. We have been able to increase our income thanks to the training, which taught us to adopt a more entrepreneurial approach to our work. Furthermore, we have gained more opportunities to participate with community members who now understand that this can also be a job for women. It is clear to us that this is a partnership we want to maintain for a long time,” said María Marcelo, a project beneficiary in Los Órganos.

The documentary will also be screened in Huacho on July 14th, and will be attended by fishermen and their families who work in the Carquín cove. To learn more about the project, visit [website address]. https://profonanpe.org.pe/pesca-resiliente/
