Profonanpe will participate in four new projects financed by the GEF

Peru's Environmental Fund will manage more than 40 million dollars, which will help promote nature conservation and sustainability.

Following a selection process carried out during October 2020, Profonanpe has been chosen as the entity that will provide administrative and fiduciary support to the Ministry of the Environment -MINAM, which will execute four projects financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) after their design is approved.

These projects are framed within the GEF's environmental impact programs and focal areas, as well as within the strategic environmental guidelines prioritized by the Ministry, in its capacity as the governing body of the Environmental Sector and GEF Focal Point in Peru.

To date, Profonanpe has implemented 57 projects, 18 of which are currently underway. Specifically, 14 of these projects have been funded by the GEF in various regions of our country.

Thus, the four new projects are as follows:

  1. “Deforestation-free value chains in the Peruvian Amazon”, whose objective is to reduce deforestation and land degradation caused by the increased production of agricultural products (cocoa, coffee and palm) in important economic-ecological jurisdictions in the northwest of our Amazon.
  2. “Building human well-being and resilience in Amazonian forests through the valorization of Biodiversity for Food Security and Biobusinesses based on standing forests, in a context of Climate Change”, which seeks to contribute to the conservation of wild Amazonian ecosystems, terrestrial and aquatic, so that they remain healthy, functional and resilient to climate change.
  3. “Improving the sustainability of electric mobility for low-carbon urban transport and the REP approach to batteries and vehicle components”, whose purpose is to reduce GHG emissions from urban transport and improve air quality through the expansion of electric mobility technologies in Peru.
  4. “Conservation and Recovery of the Dry Forest of the North Coast of Peru.” We want to promote the conservation and recovery of the dry forests of the Peruvian coast, strengthening the connectivity and resilience of the prioritized ecosystems, increasing the adaptive capacity of the populations and generating sustainable local livelihoods.

The development of these initiatives will stimulate the creation of greater opportunities for the sustainable use of natural resources, as well as the enhancement of actions that mitigate climate change and promote environmental conservation.
