Peru now has a new nationwide tool to promote the protection and conservation of pollinating insects. It is the “More Pollinators, More Life” Educational Kit” Developed by the Ministry of the Environment’s Municipal Program for Education, Culture, and Environmental Citizenship (EDUCCA) as part of the regional Poli-LAC project, this educational and community resource will be distributed through local governments and educational institutions nationwide.
The educational kit aims to raise awareness about the importance of pollinating insects—such as bees, butterflies, flies, and beetles—for the balance of ecosystems and food production, through educational resources tailored to different audiences that will be progressively implemented in awareness-raising activities, educational campaigns, and training programs in the 1,056 municipalities participating in the EDUCCA Municipal Program.
The educational materials are available at virtually on the National Environmental Information System (SINIA) platform, making it accessible to teachers, environmental advocates, and the general public.
As part of the implementation of the Poli-LAC project in the Oxapampa – Ashaninka – Yanesha (BIOAY), the kit is being distributed in physical format to the eight municipalities that comprise the reserve, with the aim of strengthening local capacities to promote environmental education in this area, which is prioritized due to its high biological diversity.
The official presentation of the materials was held virtually and brought together more than 100 municipal environmental advocates and representatives from educational institutions across the country. At the event, Daniel Omar Núñez, director of the Ministry of the Environment’s Directorate of Environmental Education and Citizenship, emphasized that the kit is part of an environmental education strategy aimed at strengthening local environmental management and citizen participation.
Recognition of Commitment to Environmental Education
As part of the anniversary celebrations for the BIOAY Reserve, the Provincial Municipality of Oxapampa presented an award to the Poli-LAC project for developing the educational kit “More Pollinators, More Life,” highlighting the educational and replicable nature of the material, as well as its contribution to environmental education goals in the province, as it is a tool that can be applied in various regional contexts within the BIOAY and in other parts of the country.
