Profonanpe participated in the inauguration of the Atiquipa technified forest nursery

The joint work of municipal and community authorities has made it possible to develop actions for the conservation and restoration of agrobiodiversity in Atiquipa.

On Thursday, May 19, the Atiquipa Technified Forest Nursery was inaugurated, thus beginning various reforestation actions planned for this area, such as the official launch of the forest zoning process, the process of recognizing heritage trees in the district of Atiquipa, progress in studies of land use types, as well as the delivery of the resolution for the renewal of the recognition of the Private Conservation Area – ACP Lomas de Atiquipa.

Atiquipa is distinguished by its hills, which are home to natural and cultural heritage, and is a rich and diverse area in terms of nature and landscapes. Atiquipa is located in the province of Caravelí, in the Arequipa region.

Currently, the GEF Agrobiodiversity Project, implemented by the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM) with support from the FAO and Profonanpe, is carrying out actions for the restoration of these hills and the development of participatory instruments for community management, the management of the Conservation Area (ACP), and district and community management. In close coordination with the community, the Municipality of Atiquipa, and involved institutions such as SERFOR and ARMA of the Arequipa Regional Government, among others, the project has planned the installation of 100 hectares this year. Furthermore, recognizing the importance of prioritizing water harvesting, a fog-harvesting system is being implemented on Lloque Hill. The collected water will be channeled to reservoirs for agricultural use and human consumption.

In this context and in compliance with the project's results framework, conservation and restoration actions for the agrobiodiversity and its supporting landscapes have been planned for Atiquipa in coordination with the peasant community of Atiquipa-Jaqui and Yauca, the District Municipality of Atiquipa, the Regional Environmental Authority (ARMA) of the Regional Government of Arequipa, the Directorate of Cadastre, Zoning and Planning of SERFOR and the Technical Administration of Forestry and Wildlife of Arequipa.
