At over 4000 meters above sea level, three climate adaptation initiatives are being implemented that have won the First Call of the Puna Competitive Fund of the Resilient Puna Project and aim to promote the conservation of their territories and strengthen livelihoods and ensure climate adaptation to the effects of climate change.

Students and teachers from the Freie Universität Berlin met with the Joya del Colca and Kollawas associations, which implement Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) measures such as the conservation and restoration of wetlands, ponds, among others.

Both women-led associations seek to strengthen alpaca breeding and fiber production and boost their handicraft supply chain. Working alongside Aedes and Descosur, they will implement these measures throughout this year after securing non-reimbursable funding from the Puna Competitive Fund of the Resilient Puna project.

The students also visited the Colca Camel Association, which is boosting its alpaca fiber production with the implementation of adaptation measures in Challhuanca.

This association has become one of the main producers of alpaca fiber in the district and has won the Puna Competitive Fund with a refundable fund of up to S/ 300,000 to strengthen its value chain.

This visit took place within the framework of the course at the Freie Universität Berlin, which delves into the extraction of natural resources, environmental conservation and sustainable development, with an emphasis on the social, economic and ecological dimensions of these processes in Peru and is taught by professors Dr. Bettina Schorr and Dr. Martin Middelanis.
