The “Queuña Raymi 2020 – 2021” Reforestation Day concludes successfully”

90,600 seedlings were produced since May 2020 in an area of 34 hectares.

Last December, the peasant communities of Cuncani, Pampacorral Tambohuaylla, Lares Ayllu, and Quishuarani launched the "Queuña Raymi 2020-2021" Reforestation Campaign, which concluded in March of this year. These activities were carried out in partnership with the Andean Ecosystems Association (ECOAN), which works with its partners Acción ANDINA and Global Forest Generation. The campaign also brought together high Andean communities located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, primarily the peasant communities of the Lares district in the Cusco region.

For the second consecutive year, the GEF Agrobiodiversity-SIPAM Project, a joint initiative of the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MIDAGR), the FAO, and Profonanpe, actively participated in the reforestation and planting activities, supporting the production of 90,600 seedlings across 34 hectares. The five communities located in the upper Lares region were responsible for the production and final planting. This year, this area has contributed to the 150 hectares targeted by ECOAN for the Vilcanota River basin, and to the 7,987 hectares slated for restoration by 2030, as outlined in the Lares District's Local Development Plan.

This forestry campaign saw the participation of 1,450 community members, 650 of whom were women. Family involvement was crucial for community organization and inter-institutional support.
