Adaptation Fund

The Adaptation Fund is an international financial mechanism created under the Kyoto Protocol to support developing countries vulnerable to climate change. Its main objective is to finance adaptation projects and programs that help communities strengthen their resilience, reduce their vulnerability, and protect their livelihoods from the impacts of climate change, such as droughts, floods, and biodiversity loss.

Profonanpe

Profonanpe is the environmental fund of Peru that provides innovative alternatives for environmental care and sustainable development.

Location:

Areas of action in Cajamarca, Áncash, San Martín and Loreto

Chancay-Lambayeque Basin (in the high districts of the Department of Cajamarca); Santa Basin (Department of Áncash); 3) Lower Huallaga and Paranapura Rivers (Departments of San Martín and Loreto).

Geographic coverage of the project

Living Watersheds aims to generate direct and indirect benefits in the selected watersheds through interventions in 75 rural districts, for 226 local organizations. And the early warning systems could benefit 120,000 families.

Main
achievements

Design and initial implementation of 21 locally-led sub-national adaptation initiatives, with funding between S/. 50,000 - S/. 80,000, aligned with the National Adaptation Plan and activities aimed at strengthening their resilience and improving their capacity to respond to local challenges.

Formation of 2 technical project committees located in the Santa River Basin and Chancay Lambayeque Basin with alliances between public entities such as MINAGRI, ANA, INDECI, among others.

Formalization of 11 local organizations to access financing.

Formulation and participatory validation of 4 communal statutes with a climate risk reduction approach, for 4 Kichwa indigenous federations, incorporating community oversight, territorial management and participation of women and youth.

3 organizations are managed and led by women developing productive initiatives aimed at strengthening food security and livelihoods in the face of climate variability, with female participation in technical and productive execution.

Identification of 4 local organizations that promote cultural innovations for adaptation, linked to community management of water, pastures and traditional productive knowledge.
