Profonanpe

Profonanpe is the environmental fund of Peru that provides innovative alternatives for environmental care and sustainable development.

Location:

Loreto (River basins of the Tigre, Pastaza, Corrientes and Marañón rivers)

Loreto is the largest department in Peru, located in the Amazon rainforest, and is known for its biodiversity and rich culture. Its capital, Iquitos, is the largest city in the world inaccessible by road. It is home to nature reserves such as Pacaya Samiria and is home to indigenous communities. Its economy is based on tourism, fishing, timber, and other natural resources.

Partners/Allies in the territory:

Population of the Tigre, Pastaza, Corrientes and Marañón river basins.

The population of the Tigre, Pastaza, Corrientes, and Marañón river basins is primarily composed of Indigenous communities, such as the Achuar, Urarina, Quechua, and Kukama-Kukamiria. These communities depend on fishing, agriculture, and hunting for their subsistence. They also face challenges related to environmental conservation and the impacts of extractive activities in the Amazon.

More achievements
important to date

Since Profonanpe assumed the Technical, Administrative, and Financial Secretariat, the first 19 rehabilitation plans out of 30 submitted have been approved. These plans received more than 4,800 comments from the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem).

The approved plans correspond to 13 plans from the Corrientes basin, 4 plans from the Pastaza basin and 2 plans from the Tigre basin.

Thirteen detailed engineering files (a preliminary step for remediation) have been prepared and submitted to Minem in the Corrientes basin.

During the month of May, the first environmental remediation process will begin, corresponding to S0111 located in the Corrientes basin.

To date, 146 sites impacted by hydrocarbon activities have been prioritized.

A fund of more than S/. 430 million is managed.

Institutional framework: MOP, POA, guidelines, contract renegotiation.
