This finding strengthens scientific understanding of the area\u2019s biodiversity, lays the groundwork for implementing a community-based monitoring program, and promotes birdwatching tourism as a sustainable development option for local communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dal\u00ed Diaz, field coordinator for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natureandculture.org\/es\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature and Culture International<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explains that the surveys were conducted between November 2025 and April 2026 using the \u201cpoint count\u201d methodology, supplemented by targeted searches. Twenty monitoring points were established across two survey areas, located between 1,700 and 2,950 meters above sea level, which made it possible to record birds associated with well-preserved montane forests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notable among the records are species of high value for conservation and nature-based tourism, such as the bearded guan (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Penelope Barbata<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the black-billed Andean toucan (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andigena nigrirostris<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and five boreal migratory species that use these forests during part of their life cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the project, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natureandculture.org\/es\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature and Culture International<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It developed a community bird monitoring protocol and a practical guide that will enable the training of local residents and students from the National University of Ja\u00e9n in techniques for observing, identifying, and recording birds using tools such as eBird and Merlin Bird ID. In addition, through theoretical and practical workshops, participants will strengthen their skills in ornithology, biodiversity monitoring, and birdwatching tourism, helping to build a network of community monitors that supports biodiversity monitoring and the conservation of Cajamarca\u2019s natural heritage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community-based monitoring generates valuable information for bird conservation, strengthens local communities\u2019 connection to their territory, and creates opportunities to promote nature-based tourism as a sustainable activity<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab, said Dal\u00ed Diaz.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conserva Aves is an alliance between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcbirds.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Bird Conservancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ABC), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audubon.org\/es\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Audubon Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BirdLife International,<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdscanada.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birds Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redlac.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latin American and Caribbean Environmental Funds Network <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(RedLAC). In Peru it is implemented by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Profonanpe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in conjunction with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecoanperu.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andean Ecosystems Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ECOAN).
