This outcome was made possible through the \u00bbCrafts with Purpose\u201d subprogram, carried out between April and June 2026 by Conservation and Environmental Research (CIAM), as part of the project <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognition of the Nevado de Tunsho Community Private Conservation Area (ACP)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, part of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/en\/canned-birds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Conserva Aves initiative.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the course of 7 sessions, the participants learned about the stages of textile production, from sorting, washing, carding, and spinning the fiber to designing, weaving, and embroidering, as well as basic criteria for evaluating and marketing their products. This process was guided by Mariela L\u00e1zaro Reyes, a specialist in the processing of sheep and alpaca fiber, and received technical support from the CIAM team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55113 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/productostextiles.png\" alt=\"Textile products made by the women of Suitucancha - \u00a9 CIAM \" width=\"595\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/productostextiles.png 595w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/productostextiles-300x197.png 300w, https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/productostextiles-18x12.png 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Textile products made by the women of Suitucancha \u2013 \u00a9 CIAM<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a key part of the process, the participants incorporated elements of Suitucancha\u2019s territorial identity into their textiles, drawing inspiration from the landscape, biodiversity, and conservation values of the Nevado de Tunsho Community Protected Area (ACP). Among these, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cinclodes palliatus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (huaca pishjo), a bird endemic to Peru that is classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, whose presence underscores the importance of protecting this territory. In this way, this initiative transforms textile production into a tool for strengthening territorial identity, promoting conservation, and creating opportunities for sustainable development.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00abI enjoyed capturing the natural beauty of Suitucancha in a woven piece\u2014the Nevado de Tunsho or the endangered little bird, the huaca pishjo\u2014so that the local community can become more aware and understand the importance of protecting it. \u00bbParticipating in these kinds of workshops is very exciting because it\u2019s a great opportunity to learn new and inspiring things,\u201d, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Nilda Salvador of the Suitucancha Peasant Community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conserva Aves is an alliance between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcbirds.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Bird Conservancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ABC), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audubon.org\/es\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Audubon Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BirdLife International,<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdscanada.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birds Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redlac.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latin American and Caribbean Environmental Funds Network <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(RedLAC). In Peru it is implemented by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Profonanpe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in conjunction with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecoanperu.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andean Ecosystems Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ECOAN).
