{"id":54932,"date":"2026-08-05T00:18:55","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T05:18:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/?p=54932"},"modified":"2026-08-05T00:21:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T05:21:08","slug":"the-presence-of-piaci-in-otishi-national-park-has-been-confirmed-and-the-situation-requires-urgent-attention-to-basic-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/profonanpe.org.pe\/en\/se-confirma-presencia-de-piaci-en-el-parque-nacional-otishi-y-la-care-demanda-atencion-urgente-de-servicios-basicos\/","title":{"rendered":"The presence of PIACI in Otishi National Park has been confirmed, and CARE is calling for urgent attention to basic services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the facilities of the Ash\u00e1ninka Center of the Ene River (CARE) in Satipo, the final version of the anthropological study assessing the vulnerability of Ash\u00e1ninka families living in Otishi National Park and the Ash\u00e1ninka Communal Reserve was presented.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meeting brought together the institutions involved in the study, including representatives from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.pe\/cultura\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ministry of Culture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.pe\/sernanp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sernanp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aidesep.org.pe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Rainforest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Aidesep), the Ash\u00e1ninka Federation of the Ene River (FARE), the Ash\u00e1ninka Central Organization of the Ene River (CARE), and the Amazon Forests ASL2 project team. Also in attendance were families from the five indigenous communities that participated in the study and are located in the middle and upper Ene River regions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study, which began in October 2024, confirmed the presence of vulnerable indigenous families\u2014including both those in initial contact and those in isolation\u2014and estimated there to be 275 families in the two aforementioned protected areas. Furthermore, it highlights their high territorial, sociocultural, and immunological vulnerability to external threats such as the spread of illegal activities and the lack of basic services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CARE President \u00c1ngel Pedro Valerio was emphatic in pointing out that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is not enough to simply acknowledge the existence of these families; among other things, a health center is needed for the surrounding communities, because the lack of medical care puts the lives of our people at risk.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His remarks highlighted the urgency of taking concrete measures to complement territorial protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the representative of the Directorate for Isolated Communities and Initial Contact (DACI) of the Ministry of Culture emphasized that the findings<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThey are essential for guiding actions to safeguard the PIACI and ensuring that neighboring communities have access to their cultural and territorial rights within the framework of the Special Cross-Sectoral Regime.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, emphasizing the need to implement protocols to protect the rights of these populations. Similarly, Sernanp highlighted the importance of this information for more effective zoning of protected natural areas (ANPs) and for developing strategies to protect both ecosystems and vulnerable families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This initiative by the ASL2 Amazon Forests project aims to strengthen the conservation and sustainable use of Amazonian territories. The presentation of the study represents a decisive step toward comprehensive management of Amazonian territories, with a focus on rights and the active participation of Indigenous communities.
